Firstly, there is more evidence that Jesus walked this Earth than there is evidence of any other historicaly fact. If you do not believe in a historical Jesus, then you can believe in nothing you have ever learned about human history.
Secondly, many people did pray to Jesus while he was on earth. Numerous examples can be found throughout all of the gospels. Blind men pleading for sight, lepers longing to be healed, the demon possessed wanting to be free, mourners calling for the dead to be raised, sinners humbly asking to be forgiven.
In every case, Jesus answered. Usually with the desired healing, sometimes with warnings or rebukes if the request was given with the wrong motives.

People prayed to Jesus all the time during his public ministry - usually for some kind of healing or for food. And Jesus did the same thing that he still does - answered the prayers.

Prayer is simply a means of communication, such as parent to a child. While your not saying anything in prayer that God doesn't already know, that is not the point. Rather it is the willingness to simply stop and humble yourself, and ask. But it is more than that. We raise our kids with rules and requirements when they are young, but when they are older, when they know the right and wrong, then your communication becomes different...you actually talk to your parents not just constantly ask for things. This is a maturing process. However, to answer your question...people did often ask things of Him. While this wouldn't constitute prayer, they were begging favors of Him. He answered them in many ways, depending on the spirit and reason of the request....even to telling one of His disciples "get behind me Satan"...basically saying that what was being asked was wrong and the motivation had to be from selfish reasons.
I suppose that is about as close to an honest answer as you can get, since your question is hypothetical.

People DID pray to Jesus while He was on earth. Doubting Thomas worshipped Him, calling Him "My Lord and My God." Several people desiring healing or forgiveness knelt and prayed to Him. Since He was God in human form, this was appropriate for them to do then and also is now; He still accepts prayer.

People DID pray to him. He healed people and granted their prayers in the name of his Father. Hello? What do you think the crowds following him were doing? Get the new testament.

well Jesus did walk the earth, even non christians recorded eyewitness testimony to that.... that aside...
I think he would have told them to pray to the father, God, as he had not yet died for our sins
