Oh yes they can. They can also give you other things like ringworm, mange and other diseases. You need to know what you are dealing with. Probably it is fleas, but if you see hair loss or other weird conditions, you'll want to visit the vet.
Often you will not see the fleas among your dogs hair. Try looking at the belly area where the hair is thin. If you see one flea, it is a sure bet your pup has many more and your home is infested too.
Don't see any fleas? Put your pup on a white sheet or a layer of white paper. Briskly rub his sides, especially near the "arm pits" and the area near his tail. If you see a brown dandruff, you can bet your dog has fleas. This is called "flea dirt" and it is the excrement of the fleas after they feast on your dog's blood. If you get the flea dirt wet, you'll see it turn red from the blood.
There are three great products you can use to get rid of the fleas, but you're going to need to get them through the vet. The first is Capstar. This will kill fleas currently on your dog. They'll drop dead and kamikazee off your pet at an alarming rate. The problem is the dog can get the fleas right back again tomorrow, so you need to follow up with Frontline Plus. This will kill the fleas currently on your dog and prevent eggs from hatching. It also prevents ticks. I make sure my dogs get their Frontline once a month year round.
Now the next problem is the fleas biting you and reinfesting your flea-free pup. For that you need to use flea killer on the dog's bed and every place the dog might go. The flea eggs can be deposited in the cracks of the sofa, the carpeting and even between the floorboards on a hardwood floor. Your vet can sell you a can of spray called Knockout. This kills fleas on the premises and my vet told me that it is effective for several months at a time.
Of course you want to consult your vet on whether any of these products are appropriate for a pup of your pet's age. And you'll want to follow the directions exactly.
WARNING: Do not bother with flea colllars. They only protect your pup's neck. Flea baths and sprays and other products can be harmful to young puppies. Read labels and remember that the best source of info is YOUR VET.
Good luck.

If you dog has fleas the fleas can infest your house especially the furniture. The fleas will bite you if they get on your skin. The easiest way I know is to put a white sheet on the floor and put the dog on the sheet and brush its hair if you see black specks that move on the sheet then you have fleas. My home had fleas once because of my dog and the only way we could get rid of them was to take the dog to the groomers for a flea dip that kills the fleas that are on him and at the same time "fog" the house. There are cans of bug killer that you can get at the hardware store. You place it in the middle of the room and turn it on. A fog of bug killer covers the room and kills all of the bugs. Hope this helps. The site listed is a good room fogger from Ace Hardware.

Humans can be biten by the fleas - looks like misquto bites! You will not see the bites on the pet. If you bath the dog in flea shampoo, use a white towel and if the dog has flea you will see them on the towel..
