There are 3 major credit companies. They have to give you one free credit report a year.

If you ask a different company each time, every 4 months you can get a free credit report.

Go to the following site to ask:

You only want a fraud alert on your credit if you've been a victim of fraud. Credit monitoring agencies are usually a rip off.

If you have been a victim of fraud, you can call the agencies and they will put it in your file for like 30 - 90 days. Then file a police report and send it to the agencies. It will stay on there for life.

Read the fine print. After the free introductory period, you will automatically be charged in future months, unless you make the effort to cancel.
