In Washington state you do need a permit to both serve alcohol and to mix &/or pour alcholic beverages.
when I got my permit it cost $25.00 for a class 12 (for serving only) and $35.00 for a class 13 (mixing/pouring/serving)
They have to be renewed periodically. The liquer control board administers the test.
It isn't a mixologists test. It is a test to determine one's knowledge of levels and effects of BAC, Legal responsibilies, prevetitive measures and so forth.
Even if you don't want to be a bartender, it is a good thing to have at least a class 12 if you want to work in food service. It is required in Washington state to even carry a beer to a guests table.

Really easy, just go to school. Costs about $300-$500 depending where you go. Also, a lot of times the schools will help you get a job afterwards. Usually if you get a job you need to start out as a bar back or busing tables,so you learn the rules of the individual bar, versus starting out bartending right away.

I went to bartending school. I got a job through the school's job reference. It cost $500 to go to school. I went to work for a private organization, not a public bar, around four years ago. I highly recommend working for one of these "clubs", the pay is better (usually by the hour instead of shift pay), the work is easier (they usually have janitorial staff - no cleaning bathrooms), and the clientele is more behaved (they are members and can be disciplined for misbehaving). The only downfall is the politics. Keep out of all political discussions and you will do well. Good Luck !!

You don't need a license in the US for bartending. The best way to get a job is to start out as a waiter and learn the business then just get behind the bar.
