Fathers play an important role in child rearing. I am going to include a link to an article that discusses that very topic. I found it very enlightening, I hope you will as well.

The answer really depends on the strenghts and weakness
of whatever parents are available.

If non Mom is available, then its pretty clear that the father
has to take on ALL of the parental roles, etc.

However, regardless of who else is around, a father must
provide a good role model of what a man should be. Similarly,
no matter who else is around, a mother must provide a good
role model of what a woman should be.

This is important to the development of children of either
sex.

Certainly, parents should (!) be honest, caring, tolerant,
altruistic, prepared, thrifty ... (wait a minute, I'm drifting off
into boy scouts...)

When both parents are present in a heterosexual couple,
I really see no difference in who does what. There are a lot
of social norms, but no studies indicating problems if those
norms aren't followed. If Mom is out earning the bacon and
Dad is changing diapers, there is no credible evidence that
the kids will develop multiple personalites or whatever...

The same as the mothers. It took them both to create the child, it should take them both to raise the child. A child needs a Father just as much as he/she needs their Mother. Thank goodness it's not like it used to be when the Fathers did nothing except pay the bills and play ball from time to time. Equality! It's the best thing for the children and the parents... :)

As large as possible?

I am a father of 2 boys (4+1/2 and 1+1/2) and I wish I could spend more time with them.

However, it is not necessary. There are plenty of single mothers out there who raise their children properly, without the help of a father figure.

That being said, I hope every boy and girl out there would have some sort of a father figure in their lives (and no, jesus don't count)

The same as the mother. The parents are role models. The children develop a sense of what is normal and acceptable behavior by observing their parents. This is just as true for the father as the mother.

To be there all the time and provide a good role model. A parent has to be responsible and provide love and security 100%. Its a partnership between the mother and the father.

He should, at the very least, provide finacial support to his children. But I also believe that he should provide emotional and developmental support as well. He should care for his child just like a mother does. The child's well-being should always be the most important thing to parents, whether it is a mom or a dad.

I am sad to say that this is not always the case though....

To be a provider, guider, counselor, protector, spiritual leader, disciplinarian, and example. A father's daughter will use him as her pattern of what manhood means and will likely choose a husband similar to him. A son will eventually become a man much like his father. But motherhood is just as important. Children NEED both parents!

That is way too involved to say in a tiny forum like this. There are aspects of your personality and development that you only get from the father. And then it depends on whether your a girl or boy, because they take different things from him.
I would say in single words, leader, strength, honesty, guidence, teaching, discipline, understanding,...just to put a scratch in the tip of the iceberg.

For a boy: how to be a man and how to treat a woman(mom)
For a girl: How a man should act and how a woman should be treated by a man(dad and mom)
When done properly many of societies ills disappear.
