It isn't. The Bible and its symbolism were translated incorrectly. When it described Hell as a place of fire and brimstone, it was not literally meant. It was a symbolic referral to the place where people threw their children into this man-made lake of fire to burn them as sacrifices to false gods. As the children were tortured in the fire and were sacrificed in the lake of fire, the souls which go to Hell are tortured although not in that way. When the Bible describes Hell as a place of torment, it is literally but not a physical, bodily torment. The gnashing of teeth comes from the grimacing and the torment that everyone will feel emotionally and mentally, and the torment comes from them seeing how they've hurt people and the sins they've committed and knowing that they've not been saved. Once you die or are transfigured, you know almost everything. You know how everything that you've done was wrong. Everyone realizes the consequences of their actions. The murderers feel the pain and suffering of those they've killed and their families and friends. Those who've killed their kids feel the pain their kids felt and feel it as a parent's loss also. Everyone knows what they've done and how it's affected everyone else, but those who go to Hell don't have the assurance of being forgiven and being able to make things right once again. However, even they have another chance. When Jesus died on the cross, He went to Hell for three days to speak to the souls there and teach them the things they refused to listen to on Earth. They were the ones He spoke of when He said He must go to the others, those who are "not of this flock". Everyone has a second chance. God wouldn't be the loving, gracious, merciful God that He is otherwise. He loves us all and wants us all to come to Him. Therefore, why would we think that He would create Hell to be hot and an actual lake of fire?

I love all of these people talking about why Hell is hot or Cold. HOW THE EFF WOULD THEY KNOW? How would anyone know really? Our views on Heaven and Hell have been programmed into our brains since birth and no one even knows if these places truly exist. It's just what our parents and the rest of society has made up. Give me a break people. You don't know what it's like there or even if there is a there. You are just putting whatever for 2 points.

Hell has been variously conceived by Christians as a place of extreme cold (Dante described the lowest circle of Hell, which is reserved for traitors, as a lake of ice frozen by the flapping wings of Satan) or unbearable heat with lakes of fire and sulfurous plumes. Either way, it's conceived as a very unpleasant place, a prison for the damned, who suffer eternal torment.

Many Buddhists also believe that those who have committed evil acts go to one of several hells to suffer after death. Some of those hells are cold, others hot.

Have you ever been in a small room with a whole bunch of people in it? That's why. There are way more people in hell than there are in heaven. Besides, hell has a ceiling to keep the heat in. the heat in heaven just goes off into space.

That...and most really hot chicks end up in hell.

that's a good question. It could just as easily be freezing cold.

I personally hate heat more than cold, so a hot hell makes sense to me.

Maybe people are supposed to be "burning with shame" or something.

They had to put something frightening there in order to scare people into following the religion. It was either that or... I dunno, what else was scary at the time? Disease? Wild animals? Probably chose fire because it hurt the most.
