Islam is a faith, whose tradition states that a man by the name of Muhammad encountered the angel Gabriel, and Gabriel told Muhammad to recite words directly dictated by the angel himself, which is supposedly the final and complete revelation from God. The entire corpus of these revelations, which were revealed to Muhammad over the course of time became the Qu’ran (Koran), the most revered book in Islam. The Qu’ran borrows from both Jewish and Christian tradition, thus many of the prophets shared between Christians and Jews, such as Abraham, Elijah, Moses, etc. are revered figures within the Muslim faith. Jesus is also considered a prophet in the Qu’ran but not the son of God. They also believed that Jesus did not die on the cross but that a proxy died in his stead in order to deceive his enemies, and he directly ascended into heaven, just like Elijah and Muhammad himself was purported to have done. Given that Islam does share the prophets of the Old Testament, and holds Jesus in high esteem, it also shares many biblical stories.

The Qu’ran and much of Islamic faith is premised on the notion that God had revealed his divine will to both the Jews and the Christians, but both groups either inadvertently, through successive generations of oral tradition and written translation, or purposely as result of ideological motives, have omitted and distorted this message, and therefore their version of God’s revelation is distorted and replete with half truths and mistakes. The Qu’ran, in its entirety is considered by mainstream and fundamentalist Muslims to be entirely inerrant. Since the totality of error free revelation was given to Muhammad, and since he was charged with the spread of this message, he is considered the most supreme and final prophet, superseding Abraham, Moses, Elijah, and even Jesus himself in prophetic significance. He is the ultimate Muslim and any good Muslim is to emulate his example. Unfortunately, given that he was intimately involved in military campaigns, that gives many practicing Muslims a degree of theological justification to see holy war (Jihad) as part and parcel of their faith.

With that brief synopsis of Islam, lets move onto your question concerning the practice of females donning various garments to cover their head, face, and sometimes the entirety of their body. Though I haven’t read the Qu’ran from cover to cover, the sections that I have read do have comments concerning women covering themselves for the sake of modesty, but it does not specify to what extent or what in specific that needs to covered to achieve this level of modesty. So when you see a Muslim with a Hijab (just the head covering) or a Burka (the head to toe covering) it has some foundation in Islamic teaching, but the extreme to which it is or not practice is completely dictated by the culture. That is why in Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia, you have women covered from head to toe, while in moderate Muslim countries like Turkey or Jordan you will see maybe just the head covering or no covering at all.

I hope that this answers your questions.

Is that what you really think Islam is all about? Covering your whole body in black sheets? Read more about Islam and meet Muslims before you ask this question.

Islam is about sealing a message that has been preached by all previous Prophets of Allah (swt) Moses, Joseph, David, Jesus, Solomon, ...etc (pbut). It's a consistant clear message of not worshiping other than One God and not associating any partners with Him. That's the core message of Islam. By sending Mohammed (pbuh), Allah (swt) was fullfulling a promise he made to all the previous Prophets:

3:81 Behold! Allah took the covenant of the prophets, saying: "I give you a Book and Wisdom; then comes to you an apostle, confirming what is with you; do ye believe in him and render him help." Allah said: "Do ye agree, and take this my Covenant as binding on you?" They said: "We agree." He said: "Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses."

IMO this verse pretty much describes Islam:

2:177 It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces Towards east or West; but it is righteousness- to believe in Allah and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity; to fulfil the contracts which ye have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the Allah.fearing.

I am a Muslim women and I do cover but that is one of the minor acts of worship that non-Muslim make a big deal of cause it's physical. Nor are Muslims restricted to color rather most adhere to what the society they reside in deems as modest and dress accordingly.

What are the Pillars of Islam/who is a Muslim? Someone who professes there is Only one God, and Mohammed is his last messenger, preforms the 5 daily prayers, gives charity to the poor, fast the month of Ramadan, and if capable make pilgramige to Mecca at least once in his/her lifetime.

What are the pillars belief? Believing Allah is one, belief in the Angels, in the Messengers sent before Mohammed, and the previous scriptures sent to them, in judgement day, and belief in destiny (good or bad).

If you read the Quran you'd notice that most of the emphasis is on believing in the oneness of God and not associating anyone to Him, much emphasis is given to charity, patience, prayer, justice, ... etc barely any mention of clothes. The Israa and Miraj is a miracle but isn't the core belief of Islam either.

You must pray approximately this, listed below are a few scriptures on prayer... If any of you lack knowledge, allow him ask of God, that giveth to all guys liberally, and upbraideth no longer; and it shall take delivery of him. -James a million:five Ask, and it shall take delivery of you; search, and ye shall uncover; knock, and it can be opened unto you. For every person that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it can be opened. -Matthew 7:7-eight And whilst ye shall obtain those matters, I could exhort you that ye could ask God, the Eternal Father, within the title of Christ, if those matters aren't real; and if ye shall ask with a honest middle, with truly reason, having religion in Christ, he's going to happen the reality of it unto you, by way of the vigour of the Holy Ghost -Moroni 10:four Hope this helped. I've been Mormon for nearly one and a part years now. I have spotted a dramatic difference in myself.

Allah says in Holy Quran Surah Bani-Israeil ;ch#17 verse#1....
" Glorified be Hw Who carried His servant by night from the Inviolable Place of Worship to the Far Distant Place of Worship the neighbourhood whereof We have blessed, We might show him of Our tokens!LO!He only is the Hearer, the Seer." (ch#17 verse#1....)

The angel is nothing his name is Jibraeil ...... he is the servant of Allah as well as of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) this angel give the words of Allah to the Prophet (pbuh) in other word acting as ambessador.... this angel is the same angle which the christian consider as god.....in trinity....

So sad how people can be sooo ignorant and try to bash another religion because their religion is confusing.

Why don't you just read the Quran and then make your comments?

Why don't you read from Muslim sources? Would it be right for me to learn about Christianity from a Buddist...NO

Just gain some knowlege and then make your comments.

YOu tell me why are there so many women converting to Islam..WHy...More women than men...4:1 ratio...

Here is one feminst had to say about Islam just read carefully.

"As a modern westerner with a career, of course I had to look into Islam's attitude to women - I couldn't be oppressed all of a sudden. But I discovered that it is pro-women and pro-men; in Islam, women had the right to vote in the year 600. Men dress modestly, women dress modestly; neither should flirt with the eyes, but rather they should lower their gaze. I think it's unhealthy to flaunt your sexuality - it attracts the wrong energy back." (MTV Presenter Kristiane Backer after being a Muslim) "Since I called myself a feminist, my early reading centered around women in Islam. I thought Islam oppressed women. In my Women's Studies courses I had read about Muslim women who were not allowed to leave their homes and were forced to cover their heads. Of course I saw hijab as an oppressive tool imposed by men rather than as an expression of self-respect and dignity. What I discovered in my readings surprised me. Islam not only does not oppress women, but actually liberates them, having given them rights in the 6th century that we have only gained in this century in this country: the right to own property and wealth and to maintain that in her name after marriage; the right to vote; and the right to divorce." (Karima Slack, an American feminist from secular humanism to Islam)
