Baptism is the culminating event, but there is a process that the person undertakes before being baptised.

This process is called cathecism. If the person has never been baptized in another denomination, one seeks guidance from a spiritual father who guides the cathecist through the process. Some churches sponsor adult cathecism (akin to Sunday School for children).

Once the spiritual father feels that the cathecist is ready for baptism into the Holy Orthodox faith, the sacrament takes place and the cathecist "puts on" Christ and the Holy Spirit for the journey ahead.

If the cathecist, in another denomination, has already been baptized by water (immersion or otherwise) in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, then the sacrament of Chrismation can be performed. However, the cathecist would still go through cathecism prior to Chrismation.

Living a Christ centered life involves more than factual understanding, but a life transformation as you replace your old life for a new life in Christ.

Good luck.
