I am 29 and currently living at my mother's house since moving back to Virginia. I was living in Mississippi until Hurricane Katrina hit. My financial situation turned south after that. Now I am trying to go back to school and have been accepted to a school in Nashville, Tennessee. I need to find enough money to take care of school, living, transportation, and other expenses. Please help

sounds like you would be eligible for financial aid. you'll never know until you ask. contact your schools financial aid office and ask them what to do. you'll need to fill out the FAFSA (a government form) it's a pain in the you know what, but if you get free money for school, it'll be worth it, won't it?

there are also many grants given based on major field of study, ethnicity, children of disabled or veterans, etc, etc. do a search on yahoo for different types of grants that my be available to you.

you might also want to visit the reference section at your local library. one of the librarains might be knowledgable on the topic. ask.

you can also look into various work-study progams where you work part time for the school and they pay you either in cash or reduced tuition.

when i was in graduate school, i was a graduate assistant for a professor. i held office hours, graded homework, and tests. it took about 10-15 hours per week and for that, my tuition was covered plus a monthly stipend of a few hundred dollars. what a great deal.

otherwise, you'll just have to find a job near where your school is.

just because you've been accepted at a school in Nashville doesn't mean it's necessarily the best idea to attend that school.
you'll have to pay for room & board and living expenses.

you might be better of going to at school near your mother's house. that should eliminate or at least reduce the room & board but that's a decision for you to make. good luck. http://www.top10moneysecrets.com

Apply for a federal stafford loan. You may be offered a subsidized portion, which means that the government pays the interest unitl you graduate and the unsubsidized portion requires that you pay interest while in school. You are not required to make any payments until you are all done with school or withdraw. This is a form of financial aid that is also offered if the Pell grant and other awards do not cover your cost of attendance. Look it up at www.FAFSA.edu

There has been funding appropriated for Katrina victims for college. You need to contact the school and ask them. They should have the information you need in applying for that financial aid. I did the same thing because my parents and I all lost our jobs...I'm in south Mississippi and Southern Miss (well graduated now :) )

Also, if you filled out for FAFSA and got denied (as I ALWAYS do) you can do a new one...a re evaluation with your new tax info in it based on lack of income last year. Good luck! :)

Sorry to say this, but you are going to have to get a job just like all of us had to when our parents would not pay for our school. Apply for grants and scholarships, as well as student loans, but you will still need a job unless someone is gonna foot the bill for you! Good Luck!

I strongly recommend the military reserves. You get a training, a monthly income, and can even get the G.I. Bill which helps pay for student loans. You won't get rich doing this, but it is good money that helps. I did this for college and it really helped with bills during and after college. In fact, I wish I were still in it for the extra cash and adventure.
