More ammunition can fill the curved space and still allow for smooth feed. The point of the bullet is narrower than the cartridge AND the rim.

The cartridges for some weapons don't have a traditional rim. An indentation is made around the back of the cartridge to create a rimlike edge to hold back and later eject the cartridge. This kind of ammunition can fit in a squared magazine.

If they were straight, then the clip would eventually hinder the operator of the weapon. Running with it, carrying it, and so on. For example, the 100 round clip for the AK-47 is shaped like a half circle, with the end of it attaching near the end of the barrel.

It is curved to allow for prone position firing. If the magazines were straight, you would have to raise yourself into a vulnerable position to fire accurately. Weapons for war are very well thought out. Its why the AK-47 and its variants are still used in much fighting in the world, I mean Sh*t, it was built in 1947 and still fires like a champ.

It reduces the height of the rifle. You can't shoot from the prone position( on your belly) very well with a straight long mag. Ala the M1 Thompson sub machine guns of WW2.

I'm guessing it has to do with the ammount of ammo that they can hold since 30 rnd mags for an M16 are curved, while the smaller mags are not.
