Tough question..
But here are some questions you both need to ask before making that big decision:
1) is there a possible custody share?-This could work very well for both of you in case one of you wanted to go to dinner or go on vacation etc...
2) Who cleans up after it the most? Who is dedicated to taking the dog for walks and training?
3) Who does the dog respond to the best? BE HONEST. If you were to walk around your house would the dog follow you or stay put by the other person?
4) Who is going to have the space and money for the dog?
You can't just blow out a question on this... It is as difficult to answer as who should have custody of a child. You would not get a good answer on Yahoo Answers.

I feel that whoever spends the most time with the dog and puts in the most work and who the dog has the strongest bond with is the one who should be taking it. That is obviously who the dog would be more happy with. Also, make sure that whoever does take it will have the time to put into caring for the dog, will have the space required for the dog, and wants the dog for the right reasons, not just to be spiteful towards the other person.

If you live in the same city, it IS possible to share the dog. Friends of mine worked this out because they both loved their dog so much. They'd each keep the dog for a couple of weeks at a time.

me and my boyfriend got a dog when he was living with me. well he moved out but we are still together. the puppy goes and stays at his house a couple of times a week. he calls it "joint custody" of the dog. but you could always try the old thing of whoever the dog will come to gets to keep him. let him choose, he has feelings too.

the one who can best take care of it and desires to make the dog happy.
It is just like a child so you should figure out what is best for the animal.

If the pet was there before the relationship, then pet should stay with original owner. If pet was introduced after relationship began, then pet should be treated as a child and allowed visitation with both owners. If only one owner is interested in caring for that pet, then pet should go with that owner
