A jarhead is a derogatory name for a member of the United States Marine Corps. It is a reference to their "high and tight" haircuts which, supposedly, makes their heads resemble jars.

I knew the answer was Marine, but even I always wanted to know why they were called Jar heads. Good question.

They include "jarhead" (it was said their hats on their uniform made them look like mason jars, or that the regulation "high and tight" haircut gave the appearance of a jar-lid),

Yes it's a Marine, but

the hat or cover that is worn by the Marine should be squared away, as in properly ironed and worn. When proprerly worn the shape of the hat on top of the Marine's head would resemble a jar.

Hence the name Jarhead.

Slang for a Marine.

First used in the Royal Navy starting in the very late 18th century when having infantry especially trained to fight on ships (marine infantry, or infanterie de marine for the French) became popular Obviously, they weren't sailors, if not to say good old fashioned landlubbers, they tended to not be able to duck the support beams or the low doorways or any number of things and they would jar their heads.

Hence jarheads.
