If it's 500/5.0 and you weigh at least 100 pounds, you can take two at a time, but limit this to every 4 hours and absolutely limit it to eight tabs per 24 hours.
Bear in mind that I do not know you or anything about your medical background. This is simply the "usual" allowed dose for healthy adults with no medical considerations.

I'm not familiar with Vicodin. If it's a prescription drug, ask the pharmacist. If it's OTC, read the package directions. But why put up with the pain? See your dentist, for heaven's sake. He or she can do something about the abscess, even if it means extraction. Pain pills are just a temporary fix, and then when they wear off, you're back to square-one. Meanwhile, all that poison is traveling through your system, and could cause other problems. Please see your dentist - STAT!

Try 800 miligrams of Ibuprofen. I promise you it will help. I've had horrific tooth pain where that was all that could help me. If one vicoden doesn't help you, two will not help more. It's not the right pain med for you, and taking more than one is not how they work. Don't take any vicoden. Really, try the ibuprofen, and drink a full glass of water with it so that it absorbs quickly and correctly.

It is safe to take the amount listed on the medication that was prescribed to you! Read the label and follow it, if your name isn't on it don't take it.
The fact that others have taken it and been okay has nothing to do with you.

Are you on any antibiotics? If not you should be. That will help with the abcess and should help calm the nerve. Then, go get it fixed!
