I am not a smoker, but....

I am somewaht addicted to food, and I have had a little experience of gambling...

I think that
1) all addictions grow into addictions to relieve some pain (mental or physical). Think of a harpoon going in easily, and difficult to remove. Addictive actions initially often address the pain and seem to be an answer for it.

2) I read that cigarettes are sometimes a stimulant and sometimes a sedative in action.

3) None of us ever wants to say no to ourselves. (Never, ever again.) That childish feeling within says various things like: 'Forever is a long time.'

4) Many smokers probably are fed up with the almost obscene ads and pictures that are meant to stop people smoking.

How do we know it's the cigarettes causing the cancer? Countless other things have been linked to it as well including heredity. Asbestos was used in houses as insulation for years and wasn't forced to be removed until sometime in the 80s. It too has been linked to cancer. Countless other substances are causing cancer that have never been investigated. Everything from the food you eat to the water you drink and the air you breathe has been linked to cancer and all the tests have far too many variables. People know this.

They also know the media is famous for putting their slant on a story and exaggerating the facts and the government is corrupt. So they have no faith in the fiundings and research. Scientists during WW2 in Germany were basically forced to accept faulty info to appease the government. So it all comes down to an issue of trust.

Besides people live their life their own way. All you can do is live how you see fit. Do not try to force everyone else.

Stress is bad for us, but we all have it. Fast food is bad for us but when was the last time anyone stopped for a juicy burger at either McDonald's or any other place. Although smoking may cause some form of cancer, can someone please explain to me how a child has cancer? They never smoked so how did that happen. Why do joggers who are trying to be healthy insist on jogging where cars are pouring out all types of toxins into the air? There are so many whys that we can't answer because we can find any answer to fit our need.

Because it is an addiction, it's not so much down to the drug itself given that although it is highly addictive its withdrawal is minute, it's to do with the psychology behind it.

Smokers think they need it and so think quitting is hard, we live in an anti-smoking society rather than a pro-quitting society, and thus there are no real means to help people quit smoking.

There are constant nicotine replacement therapy advertisments for example - all of which imply smokers are stupid, so adding to the social idea of smokers being stupid, in turn making people who don't smoke anti-smoking instead of pro-qutting to support smokers kick the addiction. Such replacement treatments also not dealing with the main problem behind the adiction in fact they ignore it and such methods have the idea that smokers must suffer and deprive themselves by quitting.

Really quitting smoking is just a state of mind that needs to be conquered. Easy in theory, hard when society is constantly effecting our ideas on smoking and quitting, imbedding them deeper into our subconscious.

Smoking has been proven to create cancers. 90% of lung cancer victims are smokers. I don't smoke, wasn't stupid enough to start. For the people out there that knew the dangers beforehand, it kind of serves you right (prepare for a life of heavy coughing and generally being unfit and smelling like crap as well as massively increasing your chance of various cancers, including throat and stomach). For those of you who didn't know, I'm sorry. I had the privilege of being awar and taught. Some still are, but continue to start smoking. REALLY DUMB it is NOT cool and it stinks - a turn-off. I once saw this stunning girl about my age recently, but I could smell the smoke from her and it put me off. I'm 18 male from Uk.

Choice, impressed by others' behaviour when we are younger, habit and addiction are often reasons we keep on smoking. Just a pity a lot of us cannot give up as spontaneously as the world demands. It is a painful process and no one should judge smokers morally for a mistake made early on in their lives.

because
its the whole five minutes that I get when Mummy/wife gets to go outside (don't smoke in the house) and gets left alone
its the five minutes break from the computer at work
its a crutch
I still enjoy (stupidly)enjoy it

lots of reasons and if I could go back to when I was younger before I started smoking I would make sure that I didn't start.

yes, it is but the reason we dont stop smoking is the cravings, for it and the withdrawal from it. some dont want to quit because they dont want to gain weight of go though the withdraws.
in the long run people will quit on their own the smokes are getting higher price and the smokers rights are starting to fizzle out so when the time comes they will. i will be stopping on sept 1.
