Here in Tucson a person can get a discount on their electric bill if they have medical devices used for life support & get a doctor's statement. There are all sorts of community service organizations out there that specialize in helping with rent, utilities, food boxes, etc. Do you have a Travelers Aide Society in your town? Try contacting them, or The Salvation Army, or The Gospel Rescue Mission. If they don't do this themselves, they may be able to point you in the right direction. Also, major churches also have funds available to help, especially if there are small children in the home.

Contact your utility company first. Most utility companies want to work with you, to keep your utilities on. Their customer service people can refer you to charities that can help you. In the meantime - try not to be so wasteful with your electricity: replace your bulbs with compact flourescents - they have started to come down in price. Turn lights off when you leave the room. Wear a sweater in the house during the winter and turn your heat down. Raise the temperature on your air conditioning. You should do your part before you take money away from a charity.

Contact the companies that you are getting these utilities from. I know for the gas bill, They'll ask you the average pay of the household and how many live in the house. They'll lower or even pay the entire bill for you if you aren't making enough money. Good Luck.
