First give yourself time to get used to the change. You may find you like it.
I had highlights that I hated and after waiting 6 months for them to partially grow out, I gave up and went back to (a different) salon. I had them do a semi-permanent dye to get it a little darker than my natural color. The semi-permanent stuff doesn't have any harsh chemicals and doesn't damage your hair--mine actually got shinier and softer. The dye fades out in 6-8 weeks, so I plan to repeat the process until the highlights have grown out completely, then I will be back to my natural color. Did the semi-permanent about a week ago and right now I love my hair.
(Stupid makeover shows convince everyone they need to color and highlight their hair--most people look best in their natural color!!!!)

I had the same experience years ago. I'm not sure how long it's been since you've had your hair dyed, but if it's only been a few days you may want to wait to do anything else to it. My friend a cosmotologist told me to wait a few weeks and wash it several times and condition it. I did this and was glad I did, as after a few weeks I actually liked it much better. Unless it's just unbearable for you to look at you might give this a try.

You should go back and get fixed (they'll be able to re-dye it to your original color or whatever you want), but however you should wait a week or two and use really good moisturing/repairing Shampoo & Conditioner - that way you don't fry your hair (and then you have a good amount of time, to really think about what you want them to do this time to fix it). Aslo For something like this I would reccomend Biolage - It's pricy, but this brand of shampoo and conditioner will really help and is something that's expensive and actually worth it. Pick the type of Biolage that would apply to you the most. This time when you go back, make sure you tell them that you want your hair fixed because you don't really like...and make sure you tell them exactly what you want. I hope this helps! Take care!

Once I went to get highlights and they were horrible. I have dark brown hair and the highlights were really really really thick and beyond blonde they were almost white it was terrible. It looked more like I had brown lowlights rather than highlights. I went to Eckerd (now cvs) and bought a box of I think ash brown it was like brown but red and I colored my hair. It actually looked really really nice I always wanted red hair and since my hair was so light the color really stuck. Definetly consults a stylist because you don't want to damage your hair or burn your scalp which can happen after so much treatment. My hair didn't look damaged after but just to be safe consult a stylist.

Sometimes it just takes a little while to get used to having different hair. If you wait a couple of days, you might like it.
That said, if you still don't like it, there are a couple of things you can do. If you don't like it because the person did a bad job (i.e. didn't do the highlights evenly, used an unexpected color, and so on) you can go back to the salon and ask the person to fix it.
If you don't like it just because you decided you don't like it, you can ask the person who colored your hair what to do about it. He/she will recommend a way to fade or cover up the color.

It's hair. It will grow back.
Go down the street, get some Lady Clairol and over-dye the highlights.

It is easy to dye to a darker color. Get a semi-permanent (washes out in 30 days) color from a drug store and dye it over.
I don't recommend anything that is "permanent color" to be applied on top of it One permanent color applied on top of the other may produce rather funny results (bad shedes of green and gray).
You can bleach it too, but if you never done it before - don't do it yourself now. Dyed hair (especially red) is hard to bleach. After bleaching - you can re-dye it to any color.

Go back to the beauty shop and have them fix it. Make sure you tell them exactly what you don't like and exactly what you want them to do.
This happens all the time, and most beauty shops will do repairs either free or at a discount to keep their customers coming back. Good luck!

I have been there as well. You can, depending on the chemicals used, redye it right away. If your hair feels dry right now then just ask for a toner to change the color. Toner will calm the color down for now and you can fix it later.
