Has anyone had this done? What was your experience and did you like the results? I've had constant problems with my tonsils for 2 years and am considering getting them removed. One general family practice doctor said I may have tonsilitis, but I have yet to visit a specialist. I'm going tomorrow to the doctor to get a specialist referral. Anyone with a personal tonsil story would be great. Thanks.

I was 20 when I had mine removed. I had several bouts of strep and constant fatigue from just feeling bad in general. It's rare for people to get them removed as teens or adults, but it was worth it for me. The doctor told me after the surgery that they were the worst he'd ever seen, and the tissue had become necrotic (dead). They can't necessarily tell this before the surgery unless they do a biopsy or something beforehand. When they are removed, they'll send the tissue to a pathologist to determine if there are cancerous cells or anything just to be on the safe side. Tonsils are important to your immune system so it was like night and day after they came out; I felt much better. However, the recovery was pretty painful for a few days--stinging/burning when I ate or drank because of the incisions, but it was worth it. Do see an ENT soon. Good luck!

I had many problems with my tonsils after I moved to boarding school, I had angina at least 4 times a year, and after two years the doctor said that I need the surgery. He programmed me for one week later, until then I had to run some tests. When it was about the surgery, I got some anesthetic spray, then injections, and after that the doctor cut off my tonsils. The wound hurt for a week, I couldn't talk and eat. It wasn't unbearable, but still uncomfortable. And more old are you, the healing process is more longer. Since then I still get colds, different ones than before, sometimes even more severe ones. Your tonsils are there for a reason! And that reason is to protect you from infections which could get into your body. So if you have bad breath, then brush your teeth, drink a lot of water... Don't take out your tonsils, they protect you...

Having my tonsils removed at 21 years of age was and still is the worst thing I have ever gone through. There are no words to describe the pain. It hurt to swallow, I could not eat for 2 weeks and it made my ears hurt so bad that I would cry. I could not even speak because that was even too painful. You have to drink lots and lots of water because if you don't the area where your tonsils were become dried out and you can bleed to death from it. Take the pain medicine that you are given. Don't eat ice cream or drink milk because it cause phelgm build-up and makes you cough. You don't want to cough. Drink ice water, eat popsicles.
Good luck with this. I hope you have an easier time than I did.

It's not that bad. They did mine a couple years back as an emergency when I went to the doc with a sore throat and there was a big growth on a tonsil. You just can't talk too well for a couple days, but get lots of ice cream. Don't worry about it, it is a simple procedure!

I was 6 yrs old when I got my tonsils out. Man, I was in pain for 1-2 weeks. However, the good news was that I could have a lot of ice cream and popsicles.

I got mine out last year and I was 29. The surgery was uneventful...I went in at 9am and was home by 3pm that same day. I remembering being out of it, though, and it's all a haze. Your throat really hurts, and you will always want popsicles because the cold and the liquid feels SO good. It took me 3 weeks to fully get over it and go back to work, and for a long time after my throat felt scratchy and my voice would go out at odd times. Also...and they didn't tell me until I asked...but the surgery does causes the tissues to swell against your nerves that aid in taste, and it will take some time for you to taste things normally. One thing they do is load you up on pain medicine and gargles. For the first couple of days the gargles were hard to do, but you get to really enjoy them because it feels so good against your throat. If you want to know anything else more specific, just message me and I'll tell you whatever you want to know. Since I just had it done last year, it's still fresh in my mind.

My girlfriend had her tonsil removed. They would swell up every 3 weeks or so and just cause her so much pain. She got them taken out and was pretty much worthless for two weeks or so. Just laid in bed in pain, couldn't talk, couldn't eat much. It hurt a lot. But now she doesn't have problems so it was well worth it.

Feels sort of like being hooked to the back bumper of a car and being dragged on the interstate for 25 miles
