I'VE SEEN THE AFRO AND LOCK STYLES ON THE Younger, funkier kids but was so amazed that I didn't ask how it was done! So it's not just a black hair thing! I am aware of diff. types of perms and rods...and diff. types of hair as I am a Licensed hair dresser but there is more to it i'm sure.

There are some young Japanese who get afros and dreadlocks done in Japan. They need to perm their hair because the majority of the Japanese have very straight hair. The link below shows how a Japanese guy with straight hair gets an afro and dreadlocks done using extentions.

After seeing the guy, click "hair" on the right, and you will see many Japanese with dreadlocks.

I think it would depend on the person because every person's hair is capable of doing different styles.A perm can be teased out into an afro or even if the hair is tightly curled on rods(a type of hair roller) it can be teased into an afro. I would put it on the smallest rollers possible though and use gel on each piece as it's wrapped around the rod. You can sit under a dryer to lock the curl in place so that you can tease it out later.
Dreadlocks are basically done by twisting the hair between your fingers using a locking gel or bees wax usually. It takes a while for it to "lock" but not combing or washing it for a while usually helps. After it locks you can wash it but its not necessary to do it often and I don't know too many people that use shampoo. It's usually just water.

Well to get such dry hair people need to use curd soap whenever they wash their hair.
So yeah. The hair gets dried.. more and more each time. If they rub their wet hair for a really long time with a towel then it gets fluffy.. that's a way how to do afros. Takes a while but it works.
To get dreadlocks.. well you need get the hair dry too with that curd soap. Then take a few hair Twirl the top then split the top in two and pull it all the way to the bottom. Over and over again.
You can also do it with more than just 2 pairs.
That's one method. I think it's the best for short hair.

I've never seen a Japanese person with an afro. But it's probably a wig. Dreads are easy. Hair mud. It'll hold the straightest hair.

People who are not of African descant, have to go through all types of hoops and loops to manipulate their hair to do, what ppl of the African Diaspora's hair can do naturally with little and no effort, I guess the reverse would be, like that of people of color pursuing a more "Euro" look... Asian and Caucasian alike when they desire to "dreadlock" their hair, have to first, use a "stiff" application, like stiff stuff, or molding mud... and have the hair teased, to create some "thickness" and "kink" if you will... then the hair is left unwash for a long spell as to not wash out all the gel and mold used to hold the hair in place. Tedious process, but such is anything worth desiring.
