The perfect age limit is 18. No matter how high you raise the age limit, the kids will still be drinking when they're 18, anyway.
As for good or bad? It depends on whether you choose to abuse alcohol or not - it's a drug like any other.

Alcohol is great in moderation, and as long as you don't go over the top too often then a mad night out when you don't remember much the next day is usually fun too, well at the time it is. I think European countries where the age is 16 but they're not even strict with that have got the right idea - you certainly don't get kids binge-drinking anywhere else in Europe like you do in the UK. Anyway this answer will take me to level 2, woohoo I think I deserve a wee voddy!

As an ex-licensee I think alcohol is O.K. but only if it is not abused. Too many people do not know the meaning of moderation. The age limit to buy should be raised in the U.K. to 21. The younger you are when you start abusing alcohol the more damage it does to your internal organs. Moderate drinking with meals supervised by responsible parents is O.K. It takes the wonder of alcohol away from the youngster and they are not so likely to abuse when they are then old enough to buy themselves

I think 18 is a good age limit, since 18 (in the US anyway) does make you a legal adult. I think kids should drink responsibly at home with their parents well before that age, though. In countries where all people, even younger ones, have a drink with dinner, there is much more drinking, but much less alcohol abuse, than in the US. A glass of wine with dinner never hurt anyone, after all, and I think that one of reasons kids in the US abuse alcohol so much is because it's been restricted their whole lives. I think alcohol itself is good, but alcohol abuse is very, very bad.

Alcohol can be good and bad. . ..I think the age limit should be 18, since when you are 18 you could join the army and go fight in a war, or vote for the president- but yet the government thinks you aren't responsible enough to drink, seems a little strange. Doesn't effect me nowadays, but it's a strange concept I think so I think if some things are going to be 18 everything should be.

Alcohol is neither good or bad. I enjoy a drink - good. There are alcoholics - bad.
I guess it impossible to have a perfect age limit as it depends on the maturity of the person.

Booze was ruining me at an early age, between 13 and 17. I saw the choice as very simple, stopped, and now I'm 40, and have never drunk since. I think people get pressured into drink, and all these adverts on tv show sexy young people drinking and having fun, making it odd not to drink. But they used to advertise cigarettes on tv years ago!

Alcohol is addictive, just like class a drugs. You shouldn't start drinking before 21 or 22 as it affects human development.
