If they are that concerned with gasoline explosions, why dont they make the gas pump handle an antistatic device?

Actually there have only been 150 gas station fires due to static. Never has there ever been one due to a cell phone. The warnings for cellphones were put to up to ease tensions on the myth.

Putting it on the pump handle is the same danger as on the pump. The are in short proximity to each other and fumes are there anyway. However no one touches the pad. You have to use the handle everytime.

To remove static electricity which can cause sparks. Sparks mixed with gas fumes can produce a fire or a flash fire. You can also just touch any metal on the outside of your car before opening the gas cap to remove static electricity.

Your right about the cell phones.... The pads are to drain the static charge before you open the gas lid.... I was a pump tech for several years.... It became habit to drag my hand across the pump anytime I got out of the truck. Just touching any metal part of the pump will do this.... The nozzles are supposed to have continuity bake to where the hose screws into the dispenser...

Check out this link.... it shows some gas station fires due to static. Click on the fueling awareness video on the bottom right corner of the page....https://www.opw-fc.com/Default.aspx

You've got to be the smartest guy on the face of the earth!!

I've never seen an anti-static pad before; I guess people blowing up isn't a concern for the Arizona government.

I love that people can talk themselves into anything...

the problem comes from locking the handle on and letting go...

you automatically ground your self when you pick it up...
