Why is it people lack the ability to count while in the express line?

Let's get some creative answers because this kind of thing really annoys me

Mostly because people could care less about anyone other than themselves....

"The express lane must be because Im in a rush to get out of here - not because I actually have to have less than 10 items."

Of course, it can also be due to creative counting methods. If I have five yogurts, 10 ears of corn and 20 bottles of gatorade in my basket, that is only three items! Even though you and I count it as 35 items....

Because these are the same people who believe that they should get something for nothing.

The next time someone in front of you in the Express line has more than the number of items allowed, ask them, "Do you know how many of you it would take to screw in a light bulb?" Of course, they'll say, "How many?".

The answer: "Oh, just YOU. You just stand there, the world revolves around you, doesn't it? Now take your 37 items and go into the regular line, you CUSS CUSS DIRTY WORD!"
