After 5 years of research I am preparing to write a book on this very subject. You offer me an excellent opportunity to answer this question with the 'Reader's Digest' version.

A large body of scientific evidence supports the following recommendations for reducing your risks for developing many of the most common cancers:

1) Maintain normal weight and exercise moderately on a regular basis. Obesity increases insulin levels and other hormones that can 'push' the cancer forming process (carcinogenesis).

2) Eat 7 to 9 fresh fruits and vegetables daily. Hundreds of scientific papers have concluded that high intakes of fruits and veggies are associated with reduced cancer risks. These foods contain many powerful antioxidants that prevent DNA damage. They also contain many 'cell-signaling' molecules that regulate the function of your genes and help to protect against cancer.

3) Consume lots of high-quality (extra-virgin) olive oil each day. Olive oil is packed with antioxidants and anti-cancer compounds. Recent medical studies have found a 25 - 70% decrease in breast cancer risk in people who regularly use olive oil.

4) Drink lots of green tea. Green tea, again, has many antioxidants and has been found to reduce the risks for many cancers.

5) Take a quality multi-vitamin and mineral supplement daily (not the junk ones like Centrum or One-A-day). In 2002 the Journal of the American Medical Association recommended a daily vitamin/mineral supplement for all adult Americans because it can reduce the risks for many chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer.

Leading medical researchers (e.g. Bruce Ames known for the famous laboratory cancer test - the 'Ames Test') have shown that COMMON vitamin and mineral deficiencies (folate, B12, B6, Zinc, Selenium) can cause the same type of damage to the DNA that Radiation causes - and this damage is well known to cause cancer.

6) Eat lots of spices like ginger and turmeric/curcumin because they contain powerful anti-cancer compounds.

7) Maintain a healthy 'gut'. Avoid acid blocking drugs; NSAIDs like Advil, Motrin and Aleve; and Antibiotics that disrupt the normal, healthy microflora living in your gut, etc. These drugs all have been proven to damage the gut and that leads to chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation is a significant risk for developing cancer.

Note: part of this recommendation is 'controversial' because some studies show that NSAIDs like aspirin may reduce the risk for colon cancer. However, the long-term damage they can potentially do to the lining of the gut may not 'balance' the possible benefits - especially when you consider that there are better ways to reduce inflammation without the risks associated with drugs. Fish oils, for example, are powerful anti-inflammatories that work on the same biochemical mechanisms as the drugs but without the side-effects!

These are a few of the most important (and relatively easy) steps you can take daily to significantly reduce your risk for many common cancers.

8) Naturally, avoid Alcohol and Cigarettes - both increase cancer risks.

9) Avoid (easy to 'say') chronic infections. Chronic infections produce chronic inflammation and that increases risk for cancer (and cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis, and Alzheimer's disease and more.)

In closing, one of the nice 'realities' of these recommendations is that they not only reduce cancer risks, they also reduce the risk for many other debilitating chronic diseases.

Best wishes and good luck.

It is a nice iea to try to avoid cancer, but it is not likely.
All the stuff that is in food today is chemical in nature added for flavor or shelf life and or color.
Pesticides in fruits and veggies from the way they are grown.
Pollution in the air.
Plastics that we all use and eat with or drink with daily.
Cleaning agents that are harmfull to the skin.
The list goes on forever.
Cancer is a disease that can be cured if the governments did not want population controll so badly.
But its better to sell chemo and get richer and richer.

There are many different types of cancers (blood, bone, organ, etc) and various modalities for treating each. As a simple object lesson...cancer can oftentimes be traced back to oxidative stress to the cellular [lipid] membranes which can adversely impact our DNA. To neutralize or reduce this process, one must increase their level of antioxidants through the ingestion of fruits and vegetables (not synthetic supplements like A, C and E). The data is already very conclusive on this. For your edification, I've posted some excellent research on my Yahoo Briefcase which you can freely download: http://briefcase.yahoo.com/apuzyr There is other information there, as well, which you may also find useful pertaining to high protein diets, building up the immune system, ideal blood tests, macular degeneration, diabetic neuropathy, free radicals, antioxidants, phytonutrients, synthetic vitamins vs whole food, etc.

PS: There is some truth to the old adage "Don't worry yourself sick."

First of all get a water purifier.Avoid smoking and alcohol.Eat as much colored fruit and vegetables.Keep your meat as lean as possible.Don`t over cook your food.BBQ`s are not good as the heat sears the meat and it builds carcinogens.Supplement your diet with products from www.gnld.com(don`t compromise on this point. If you have to supplement get the best.)There are still many things you can do.Read but be sensible .Not everyone has your best interests at heart.
