Okay, so I bit my tounge a few minutes ago and drew blood...and it reminded me of a quetion I asked in middle school (eons ago)and I never got a straight answer. Why does blood have a salty taste to it? In all honesty it is actually quite flavorful...in a vampirish kinda way....Lol..but seriously, does anyone know?

A good majority of our body is comprised of saline (salt). and most of it is in the bodily fluids. Tears, sweat, snot, blood etc. We're just naturally salty. Since our body produces salt on its own that way people have to watch their salt intake when they get older. Too much of any chemical be it sugar, salt, calcuim can actually be poisinous.

The human body is an amazing machine on the micro biological level.

The most common theory is that the salinity of the blood is
approximately the same salinity as the "primordial sea".

That is, as cells were first organizing their major functions,
the chemistry required a certain level of salinity. Rather than
re-evolve other techniques for solving certain problems, we
have evolved a blood system to make sure that the surrounding
salinity is what the first cells started out in.

Clearly other organism have evolved other solutions to those
problems, and still other organisms have evolved to require
different salinity.

However, if your blood's salinity increases or decreases
significantly from its norm, you will die a fairly painful death.
Its pretty important that you be neither hypo nor hypernatremic
and that is one of the things that emergency rooms and
ambulances are capable of handling as soon as you get
to them.

To maintain cell composition there must be an adequate level of sodium in the body. Table salt is sodium chloride. Get the connection?

This is largely due to the electrolyte composition of body fluids. The major extracellular cation is sodium which would be responsible for the slightly salty taste.

Well, because there's salt in it. We carry electrolytes (different kinds of nourishing salts) in our bloodstream. Our bloodstream is a way of transporting nutrients to the cells in our body. So you were literally tasting the salt.

truth is, your blood isn't salty.
human blood is only .9% salt (about 1 percent)
the salt you're probably tasting is from your skin. your skin
secretes salt when it sweats.
