No, it isn't legal. No Mormons don't practice it anymore. I wouldn't want to. It gives me the creeps to think that my hubby is with another woman. Unless God has said it's OK, then it's wrong. There has been many times when God has OKd it, but not now. It was outlawed almost 100 years ago in the US. The reason it was is because the government thought that us Mormons were going against the rest of the christian faiths. When it was outlawed, the church stopped practicing it. Yes, it was a commandment at the time, but we also believe in following the law.
There is a group here in the US that still practices it. The leader is now wanted by the FBI for crimes against children. This is why we follow the law. There is no use getting everyone all upset with us over this one little thing. This group that I mention is all messed up. Girls are forced to marry men that could be their fathers or grandfathers. They intermarry- some guys marry sisters, so the gene pool is very small.
Most of the young men now are kicked out before they turn 18 because they will take the girls that are meant for the older guys.
Most of the girls that are involved are around age 13, too young for marriage or children. This is why the law is getting involved. They are told that if they leave, they will go to hell and never be allowed to see their families again. They aren't allowed the option of saying no to a marriage. If they don't want to, they are forced into it. It's horrible. This isn't the way it is supposed to work.
Personally, I don't agree with the show "big love". It portrays an image of my religion that isn't true and it just sheds bad light on things that have happened in the past. I know at the beginning it says that the Mormons no longer practice polygamy, but yet it shows pictures of our temple, which is very sacred to us- implying that we are still involved in this practice.
I know that there are very few people who know about our religion, or will believe things about it that they hear that aren't true. If anyone would like to know about it for reals, and from a reputable source, please check out the link below.

Polygamy is not a new thing. It is still practiced world wide. In the states it was practiced by the Mormon sect (christians) but it was way back in the 1800's and has been outlawed in their chruch for over 100 years but others still do it. NOTE: it is important to distingush the difference between mormons (no polygomy and radical law breakers. ( i am mormon and yes its a sore spot cause we get group in with them all) Personally I think that polygamy works for some cultures. Those who have very little in the way of womens right (or human rights for that matter)
In western society? No way! I mean you think that your spouse would blow a fuse if you were caugfht cheating? How bout if you slept with the younger wife more often? I'll tell ya those who can do it, more power to ya but one wife b1tch1n at me is enough.

It is illegal in the US. I personally don't see anything wrong with it as long as everyone in the situation is okay with it, however, it has historically been a tool of the all powerful man and has exploited women. It just gets a little difficult when my wife is married to another man who is married to another woman who is also married to another man, etc., etc. You all end up being related by marriage. It is always seen as only men having more than one wife, but if we were to be fair, everyone could do it. It kinda makes the laws that go along with marriage, like inheritance, and the other benefits, like insurance through your spouse, a little difficult.
I think the inequality, abuse and exploitation historically associated with it is what made it so bad and the legal difficulties.

Because if a man should be allowed to have more than 1 wife, a woman should be allowed to have more than 1 husband.
Now let's say that a two polygamous spouses(each having more than one)got together, how many spouses would be in this so-called marriage?
What's more, what kind of "family" would the children be living in(if they even have any kind of family at all)?

People believe polygamy is wrong because they see the horror of monogamy and the tedious hell of married life, and they realize that having more than one wife at home sucking the life from you just compounds an already horrible mistake. At least their death by nagging goes more quickly.

everyone say's that the "Bible" says you can only have one wife/husband. Here is my question to all on this forum. If there are more women, and i think we can all agree this is fact then men, and if we are required to be married before sex, then how do we fix that problem if not for polygamy?????

god created everything in pairs, be it the animals, birds, humans, reptiles and plants. thats god way of doing things.
now as to polygamy. wll sugar suppose for eg, mrs.x has 4 husbands and has intimate relationships wif all of them. mrs.x then gets pregnant but she dunno who the child belongs to. well in those days there was no DNA testing. so that is y, god placed a rule like that.
in early years, the chastity of a woman was a very important issue and virgin mothers were made to stand in public and stoned and spat (not just in islam but also early christians too). so inorder to prevent any1 from falsely accusing a woman's chastity, god created that rule.
and moreover any couple looks beautiful. twos a couple, three is a crowd, heard of it.

In the U.S. it is against the law to have more than one spouse legally speaking. Spiritually, I believe you can have as many as you want. However I defer to Nieche- "Polygamy is having one wife to many. Monogamy is the exact same thing."

IF the government is going to stay in the marriage business, and
IF it's not going to be only between one man and one woman, then unless some sort of fraud is involved whatever consenting adults of sound mind do together in private should all be just fine.
