I'm under 25, and I'd like to buy a cheap car. Over a 6 month period, the insurance will cost much more than the car itself!! So is there a point to getting a car?

Welcome to life on the road! LOL Do you really need a car? Or can you walk, take the bus or a taxi? Unfortunately, where auto insurance is the law, it can be expensive depending on your driving history, age/sex and even city of residence. Are you trying to buy full coverage? If this is a cheap car, don't bother with anything more than basic liability. Liability will protect you from paying for someone else's car if you smash it. Likewise, if someone hits your car because of their own fault, THEIR liability will cover your car. The only thing you need full coverage for is to cover your car if it your fault, or if a freak accident occurs by nature or otherwise. In other words, consult your insurance agent, and don't pay for any more than what you really need. As long as you're working hard and earning a paycheck you should be able to afford insurance, even though it bites. You asked, is there a point to getting a car with high insurance costs? Well, ask yourself, is the cost worth the benefit? If you can walk or hitch a ride for cheaper, than the answer is NO - there's not much point to getting a car. But if you can't conveniently hitch a ride through other means or walk to where you're going, then just pony up the dough and get the car and purchase the insurance.
Hope that helps!

It depends on what you need a car for. If you can do without, then use that money to buy a small condo or something.
Best of luck and be safe.

I assume you have a good paying job? But regardless, you can ask for the minimum rquired coverage, for the state.
