My Lab is 2 years old and pretty much a great dog, very good with people and mild, however I live in a small community and in the summer there is a lot of tourist walking past my house. My Lab don't usually be tied on cause he don't leave the yard. But when there is someone passing by he runs out to the edge of the road and barks and barks, he sounds very scary, if I didn't know him I'd be scared. He has never hurt anyone and when they talk to him he acts like he found a new best friend...but some people don't talk to him and he really scares them. If one of us go out to him he gets worse. I don't know what to do with him, we've tried so many things, nothing works, and he knows he is being bad cause when they are gone on by he'll come in and hide under the table....please help before the wrong person comes along. Thks

Please don't stop him from barking. It's his job. He is naturally protecting his home. I have a german short hair that used to yelp constantly and drive us nuts. We used a shock collar on him and got him to stop doing it. But I would never try to stop him from barking at strangers. If you do this to your dog you are going to break his personality. Just keep him in the house during the day. Bathe him, get him a crate if he's obnoxious in the house and let him stay in during the summer months. I have a 100 lb white shepherd that is a therapy dog so he has to stay indoors in order to stay clean for our visits. I guess what I'm saying is if I can put up with a polar bear in my house you can surely put up with a lab. Talk to your vet and some behaviorists and I think you will find my school of thinking is pretty much what most people think.

when your dog is barking it is because he has energy my dog is the same way when they are tired they dont bark. before we go on a run if anyone would walk by he would go crazy but after a run he is totaly different he just doesnt have the energy to do it. we go on a 2-3 mile bike ride with him every morning and hes fine for the rest of the day. good luck hope this helps

a muzzle isn't going to stop him from barking, it will stop him from biting. I agree with the person that said to keep him in when tourist are going by, he is protecting his property. peanut butter?
that's giving him a reward for a bad behavior, dogs love peanut butter.............you may not want to leash or tie him up, but if he is out while the tourist are, you may have to. it's better to be safe than sorry. if one of the tourist happens to be afraid of dogs and
he runs out barking at them, they are going to be fearful, the dog will sense it, and his natural reaction is to protect, and he will probably end up biting the person.

Try peanut butter ... A spoonful ... That could keep him from barking ... Ask your vet if its okay to give a lot of peanut butter... If so, then give him spoonful of peanut butter for every time he barks ... I can't remember how my mom did it with all of our dogs ...

My brother in law uses hose to wet down his dogs when they bark their head off ... They hate getting wet ...
