It really will depend on your current weight, amount of calories expended, and your diet. **** ONE THING TO KNOW ABOUT TREADMILLS: They do a lot of the work for you. At least 35%. Because it is contstantly moving, when you place your foot down, it assists in moving you in the running motion automatically. **** YOU WILL GET MORE WORKOUT FOR YOUR TIME by jogging/running/walking on a track or outside. This is why people who can jog 4 miles on a treadmill will struggle with 1.5 miles on a track.
Of course, if a treadmill is your only option, then it is much better than not working out at all.
Also, a good workout for you may be this:
Warmup: walk on the treadmill 5-10 min
Stretch: 30 second hold on each stretch. your muscles have heated from the warmup
Weights: 30-45 minutes
Jog: Treadmill or outside for at least 20 minutes. Your body has used much of your daily calories to do the weights. It should be beginning to tire and your body will tape into your reserves (fat) to get the energy to do this jog.

Any kind of exercise will help you lose fat, but if your diet isn't in order your efforts will be wasted. So let's start with diet: Just take a common-sense approach. Don't eat when you're not hungry, don't stuff when you do eat, drink water and green tea instead of soft drinks and fruit juices (soft drinks will add so much flab to your frame it's not funny), cut way down on the "bad for you" stuff like fast food, junk food, saturated fat, refined flour/sugar, and partially hydrogenated oils (pure dietary evil). Instead, eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, lowfat dairy products, eggs, lean meats (especially fish and poultry), and whole grain breads/cereals/pasta. Here's another tip: Take a tablespoonful of olive oil before each meal. Olive oil is high in monounsaturated fat, which is very good for you, and it's also a natural appetite suppressant.
Now on to exercise: Recent studies show that evening exercise is actually more beneficial, so by all means do your workouts after work. Treadmill is good whether you're walking or jogging, but two of the best exercises for burning fat and shaping at the same time are: (1) Circuit training, with light weights, and (2) Sprint drills -- 30 second sprint, 60-90 second walk/slow jog, repeat 8-12 times.
Good luck!

#1..it takes 1200 calories per day just to live. To lose weight, you need to lower calorie intake.
#2 to help the process, you exercise. Anything more than what you are currently doing is going to help.
#3...there is no such thing as spot reducing. Your body didn't consult you when it put on fat, it's not going to consult you about taking it off.
Use a combination of aerobic and weight training to get maximum benefits. Start off your routine by doing five minutes on the treadmill at 3.5mph or so to get warmed up. Then do some weight training...large muscle groups burn more calories, so leg excercises to start with like the leg press and squats. Do some upper body training too. Finish off by 20 to 30 min. on treadmill or elliptical cross trainer. Vary your routine some to keep it interesting and challenge different muscle groups. Set a goal, work towards it, don't let the goal be your life. A piece of chocolate cake Saturday night is not going to ruin anything. Just don't eat the whole cake ;-)

Have patience and control ur eating habits also to see results. Eat only when hungry and not more than thrice a day. Nothing other than water in between. Include plenty of uncooked vegetables and fruits in each meal, preferably 50%. Chew each morsel at least 32 times. Do not touch articles of food or the cutlery in between. This will activate ur body to generate strong signals of hunger/fullness. Obey these signals. Take light exercises and brisk walks (minimum 20 min duration) regularly preferably twice a day. U will achieve what u have not even dreamt and that too in a reasonable time. Do not be in a hurry. It is however to be noted that one cannot change the shape or size of different parts of the body.

It sounds like you have a good plan...the keys are to stick to a good diet and just to be patient. The body is sometimes overzealous in protecting itself: you'll probably start losing weight right away, but then it'll appear you've reached a plateau. Your body is right now fearing starvation and it's holding tightly to its fuel. This is where a lot of people get discouraged and it slows the process down, but it's only temporary if your exercise is consistent. Giving your body more fuel in the form of protein can move the process along, as long as you keep up the cardio! Protein can be converted to fat if it isn't used.

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!
Get started today!
