Not all Christians are bible thumpers...just the ones who won't shut up about their religion and who constantly push it upon others.

Not all Christians are "bible thumpers," which admittedly is a bit derogatory.
However, all bible thumpers are Christians: Bible thumpers can be characterized by a presupposition that anything and everything in the Bible is not open to question or verification by any means other than faith and the Bible itself. As such, Bible thumpers are caught in the hamster wheel of circular thinking:
The Bible is the Word of God.
How do you know?
Because the Bible states that it is the Word of God.
Well, how do you know to believe it?
Because it says so.
(Also, Bible thumpers seem to have focused all the energy of the faithful on preventing people from having sex until the minister says it's okay.)
A Christian who is NOT a Bible Thumper believes that the Bible CONTAINS the word of God, but that that word is tempered by a combination of (a) the long tradition of church teaching and (b) the individual experience of the believer and (c) reason.
Hence, many Christians find no conflict between their faith on one hand, and evolution, abortion/birth control, or homosexuality. This more liberal tradition over time supported the abolition of slavery, women's rights, minority rights, and efforts to end poverty and oppression in general, all as a matter of faith.
So to give a name to that group of Christians and the bible-educated atheists and agnostics I suggest the following:
Bible Readers.

'Bible Punchers' sounds good to me. I was raised a Catholic so I know a bit about the bible, but I am an atheist. It was a choice I made, after I was an adult, and had the chance to look at both sides.
I am not afraid to tackle some religious questions. I think that the bible is a good source. It is the source for all modern law and it has a good code to live your life by, but it should not be taken literally. I also have a problem with organized religions. I have seen too many abuses of power in the church, from pedophile priests to the selling of permission to commit a sin--indulgences.
One of my favorite arguments is with Galileo. When he used his telescope to observe that the moons of Jupiter did not revolve around the sun, he proved that the bible had at least one error. For this crime the Church had him locked up in his tower for over 300 years. He dared to have a different point of view and was condemned for it, without the possibility of appeal.
I like to punch a hole in the sails of Bible Thumpers, when I see them in error. It doesn’t make me a bible hater. I am just someone that knows history.

Not all Christians are bible thumpers, just the psycho ones who take everything in the bible literally. Atheists don't have a religion to be extreme about. Making fun of the bible is called bible bashing though.

All Christians are not Bible Thumpers. Nobody would suggest that. It's a specific kind of Christian that uses his Bible against anyone whose belief is different.
Bible Punchers is not bad. I've never punched a Bible, but you can call me that if you want.

Hmmm...I prefer the name "bible-beliver", but if I am called a "bible thumper"...I guess it wouldn't really bother me. The question is cute...and I know you are probably not looking for the mean answers that I am sure people who resent Christians because they hate God are going to give you. The fact of the matter is that Jesus himself said if you follow Him they will hate you for they hated Him first....Jn 15:18&19...so don't sweat it you are in very good company. Also in that passage(vs 17) we are told to love one another, so probably I wouldn't try to think of calling atheists any ridiculous names...they have enough other things to worry about..."like why do I exist?"

Your question is a valid one. It gave me pause for thought, but you have a good point. I get lots of flack on here, because I am a Christian, but people, especially young ones, get the idea sometimes that nothing can harm them They think they are invulnerable. They have a live forever attitude. By their thirties or so, there way of thinking changes somewhat for the most part. Some don't and these are the ones I worry about, because they are truly lost and need to get their lives in order. Death can come at anytime, any age, and under any circumstance. He does not even promise us our next breath. Live each moment as if it were your last, for someday, it surely wll be.

I try not to call anyone names. I am a Christian, but I have a friend in Australia who is an atheist. I respect her beliefs and she respects mine. I share information with her about my Lord (sorry - our Lord - I don't want to be selfish) when she asks, but I don't push my opinions on her. When she is ready to seek the Lord, I will be there to help. I don't judge her or call her names simply because she grew up in an environment that didn't know or experience the Lord. I don't "thumb my Bible either (I may tap my fingers on it to the music of the praise band now and then). I think the Lord expects us to tolerate others - even those who seem to be "Christian haters".

true atheists would not be called "Bible Punchers".
besides, not all Christians are bible thumpers, they just have a relationship with God, not memorizing old text from an old book.

If you have never seen anyone thump or beat a bible, you have never attended a Baptist church.
No good preacher would dare give a sermon without thumping or smacking the bible several times.
Maybe you should go to church more often.
When I use the term, I am referring to Pat Robertson, we hate everyone and everything type "Christians."
No relation to intelligent people or most Christians.

It's funny because once when I was in Middle school I was called a "Bible basher" Not because I forced my beliefs on anyone, and not because I even talked about my beliefs, but only because I carried my Bible to school so I could read it. I don't think anyone should call anyone else names because that just draws the line for conflict and hatred. But it's funny though-What's the point in NOT believing in God, I would rather believe in God and follow Him, and in turn go to heaven, rather than forsaking God, and going to hell.
