Specifically, guys seem not to appreciate a woman who can take care of herself, including financially. Do they prefer helpless waifs who can't even change a lightbulb?

I don't think they do. I do know for a fact that it is a man's human nature to want to protect and provide for his woman. Just as a woman will want to protect and provide for her child.

It may be the tone or manner in which you throw your independent status around. Do you brag? Do you share expenses or is whats yours yours and his his? Have you used it anger or retaliation?

Think about how you carry yourself and present yourself. NOBODY NEEDS SOMEBODY WHO DOESN'T NEED THEM.

I think some of them do.
They like to be the knight in shining armor.
I think you should look for older guys, who have learned that the uneducated helpless waif thing is a real freakin' drag. Divorced guys paying child support and alimony would be willing to take on a financially independent gal!
Good luck

It's a jealousy problem and it's not good for the woman. When in a situation like this things always get worse w/ time too. With the experiences I've had it's best to stay away from a guy like that you couldn't stand to be w/ someone who want's to control every thing you do.

Independance can attract a man to a woman. But once he's interested, he expects her to become a "domestic engineer".

That's part of her job....they're to care for each other. But I'm not sure what it is that causes a man to expect the woman he fell in love with to change. We tell a woman to accept a man for what he is & not change him. But many a woman has done just that. Some regret it, some do not.

mature men actually like a independent women but because you make references to " guys and girls" then you are not mature enough to understand that concept. When you are a little bit older and see the world as men and women then you will be able to answer your own question. Concentrate on you right now until you grow up and then worry about men not guys

Are you kidding? The more independant she becomes the more respect and affection she'll get from me. You shouldn't have to depend upon me to support you. I'll be damn sure I'm there when you need me. Especially for emotional support and cheering you on. However if you work, contribute to the household and basically manage just fine without me having to carry your load too I love you all the more.
Plus it's a good feeling to know if I drop dead tomorrow you'll get by just fine.

Most of them are jealous, that there wife work for money that them. They just want to be the controller of the house & showing there friends this macho man attiude.
This happens when There parents didn't teach them the right things in life or they follow there father.

Because that means that you can handle your own and don't really need them for financial support. A lot of men love to be the bread winners cause that gives them control over everything.

I know....Example: I started going to the gym again and i've been looking good and instead of saying "good job" or "i'm proud of you" he tells me that its fine as long as i dont leave him behind. I think its mostly because they're lazy and don't like the fact that we accomplish more in a day, and we are always wanting to improve ourselves. I like doing stuff around the house and staying active in life. I would want my guy to do the same. and actually would ditch the guy if he wasnt up to my standards.
(just like guy in the example got ditched)

I personally love a woman who is independent. It illustrates intelligence and a strong personality--two traits I personally love. Then again, I am not like most of my male kin.
