Does the idea of giving some sort of supernatual entity control of your life give anyone else the creeps? If you took this literally--wouldn't it mean letting this entity make all your life decisions, and living like a puppet on a string (voluntarily no less).

I know a ton of Christians will come on and object to the puppet analogy but isn't that what the 'Jesus take the Wheel' analogy really means?

I'm contrasting this with the idea that Christians believe that Jesus is really in the passenger seat telling them where to go while they steer--he is not really in control of the 'car'.

Christians only say they give Jesus control--but they still make their own decisions.

LOL I know it's just a song. It's just that I hear so many people talking about how great and inspirational it is, I want to get people to give some thought to what the song is actually saying!

I mean, hitting a close call and realizing that you need to change things in your life is a great thing. But this desperate girl in the song does not recognise her own inner strength and wants to give over the control of her own life to some supernatural (nonexistant?) entity. How sad is that?

Naw, I'm not wild about the Highway to Hell song. Nor do I live in that sort of a self-destructive party-animal lifestyle. Nor do I want to.
So no, I don't relate to that song.

Yes, telling Jesus to "take the wheel" would involve Jesus being in control of one's life. Yes, it gives me the creeps, and yes I am a Christian. A lot of people may think that by following God's lead or by obeying what God asks of us that we are letting God control our lives. This is not the case. Just as we ask other people for input on what they think of a certain subject, we make a decision based on the advice given to us. WE make the decision. I fall into the catergory of: I am in control of my life, and I'll do my best to follow the directions that Jesus has given.

You misunderstand the concept of handing your life over to Jesus. Yes, you still make your own decisions---you have the power to choose between right and wrong. The difference is that with Jesus you will always receive the right answer---he will never lead you astray. You must hand your life over to someone---it must be either Jesus or the Devil. If you think that you control your own destiny, then you are sadly mistaken. If you think that al the decisions that you make are your own, then you are sadly mistaken. If you think that you can be in total control of everything in your life, then you are sadly mistaken. Jesus desires to see you saved, but the devil desires to see you destroyed. Jesus will not force you to accept him as your Lord and Savior, and the Devil can only tempt you with what you give him. No one ever controls you like a puppet on strings. You dance voluntarily to the music that tickles your ears. When Christ controls your life you are at peace and know true freedom because sin does not enter into your life. It is sin that controls without mercy. Jesus assists with mercy. Jesus loves you.

I think the song is about a desperate girl who feels as though she needs help in her life because she is on the wrong path. I honestly believe you are taking the song way too seriously. Everyone has control of his/her decision but sometimes we ask Jesus to help us in hard times. She isn't a puppet; she's a person going through a hard time. Maybe you should spend some time doing something useful.

Here, go look at the website above and do some praying for the children who have no choice in their lives. Ask Jesus to take the wheel for their lives.

I don't know, but ever since I have been a Christian I have told God that "You're driving this car". By that I mean that the Holy Spirit was inside me and I wanted Him to work through me to drive right. Often if I would forget to say this, I would have an accident or a "near-miss".

I believe the Spirit sometimes says, "You know the rules--you make the choice this time."

Another interpretation could be that by letting the goodness that Jesus preached influence our actions, we will make the right decisions.

It does creep me out if anyone believes that Jesus is going to steer you in the right direction literally.

You are asking a natural question dealing with the Spiritual realm. You probably won't "understand" any answers you are given. You ask your question from the flesh and not from Spirit.

If you are the driver and Jesus is in the passenger seat, you might want to trade seats.

In our faith based relationship with Jesus, we are doing Our Fathers will, not our own. We have given our lives to him...as he gave us Jesus to die on the cross for our sins.

If you want to know the Fathers will: If it glorifies God / Jesus or His Kingdom, then it's probably his will. If it doesn't...then it's probably your will and there's a huge difference.

The way that I interpret this song is, "When all else fails, pray." And then, if the prayer seems to work, then be glad that you have Faith, and give all credit to Jesus/God. (And I guess that if Jesus allowed her to crash, and she was severely injured, then she'd say that it was Meant To Be, that Jesus/God had special plans for her...and if she died in the traffic accident, then her family would say the same. Faith is wonderful, because it answers everything. No matter WHAT!)

to a nonbeliever this is folly ---- (Jesus Takes The Wheel")

Try listening to AC/DC "Highway To Hell"(does that suit you better?)
AC/DC
Highway To Hell (1979)
Highway To Hell

Living easy, living free
Season ticket on a one-way ride
Asking nothing, leave me be
Taking everything in my stride
Don't need reason, don't need rhyme
Ain't nothing I would rather do
Going down, party time
My friends are gonna be there too

I'm on the highway to hell

No stop signs, speed limit
Nobody's gonna slow me down
Like a wheel, gonna spin it
Nobody's gonna mess me round
Hey Satan, payin' my dues
Playing in a rocking band
Hey Momma, look at me
I'm on my way to the promised land

I'm on the highway to hell
(Don't stop me)

And I'm going down, all the way down
I'm on the highway to hell

If Cheesuz ever had a driver's licence, it would have been for a chariot. But he was a carpenter, not a charioteer. Sorry, I wouldn't give Cheesuz the wheels for my ride unless he can show some driving skill and get a licence.
