The nipples are not red or black, just normal colour. They are flat to her skin, but have this large flat hard mass behind (about 2" diameter). She is a Chihuahua.

sounds like a blocked milk duct. you can try massage or warm water. Call your local vet if it doesn't clear up soon.

By the time you read this i'm hoping you have already been to the vets but just incase you havent.......
Its mastitis take her to the vet for some antibiotics. Its a load of rubbish that the milk from a mastitis infected teat may kill the pups! get your strongest pup latched on there to help clear it. She does need to see the vet though cos it can be pretty nasty if it ulcerates and bursts - puppies are hard enough work without having to constantly clean puss from the wound off them. If it has already ulcerated and burst keep the pups away from the infected teat as they would suck on the puss by mistake (nasty)
Good luck with your pups - enjoy them cos before you know t they are old enough to leave!

I agree with olelady. We raise dogs and I have seen this. When the puppies stop sucking or don't on them they become hard like that. This happened pretty badly here recently when we weaned the puppies. They felt like they were going to burst. So I let the puppies suck all of the milk out and she was as good as new. That is only what is sounds like. Like everyone says the vet will have a more detailed and experienced answer. It wouldn't hurt to just call and ask what they think.

That is milk in the ducks from not being drank by the pups as the nipples are flat. It will get painfull and infected if not taken care of ... see a vet. or express the milk out yourself by massageing with a little warm water. to empty the ducts.

Could be mastitis. This is very nasty and painful for the mother and if there is an infection present it could kill the puppies if they try to feed from the infected nipple. Mum and pups need to go the vet to get it checked out asap. Be a responsible owner and take them asap.

sounds like mastitis. its an infection in the milk ducts that prevents the mild being produced correctly. try massaging the area to stimulate the milf flow. Then if that doesn't work it might be wise to get her to the vets. this could make her really ill, and thats not a good idea while she's rearing puppies!
