you should say goodbye to the parents because while you are at their house, you are their responsibility. It is reasonable to let them know when your own parents are taking you back. I mean, if you just disappeared they would be worried. Also, you have been eating their biscuits and drinking their soda!

Sadly, much of what is considered proper etiquette has gone by the wayside. Yes, you should make a point of saying goodbye to your friend's parents AND thank them for having you over. Her parents should also make sure that it is indeed your parents who are picking you up. At least one of your parents should come to the door, especially if they can't be seen by your friend's parents from their doorway. Why? Because there are far too many wackos out there. Both sets of parents should make a point of getting to know each other. If you were my daughter I'd want to at least be friendly (if not friends) with the parents of your friends.

If you see them while leaving I would.
A friend of my daughter's mom always calls from her cell phone in my driveway. I don't understand why she can't come up to the door. I think its rude. Would it really hurt for parents to get out of the door and actually say hello to their children's friends and parents?

Yes, say goodbye to the parents. They are the ones hosting you in their home it is polite and good manners.

It's usually appropriate to thank the hostess for having you in her home. That means you thank your friend's mom before leaving. The only situation where I could think that this isn't appropriate is if she is doing something where she shouldn't be disturbed, such as if she's in the shower, or sleeping, or so on. In that case you can ask your friend to thank his/her mom for you.

You should if they are right there or readily accessible (i.e. not in bed), especially if they did something for you like offering food or having a chat with you earlier. They would be impressed by your manner and welcome you there more. Besides, it wouldn't take much just to say Bye, would it?

Yes. You should definitely say good bye to the parents and thank you.

It's not really necessary, but aside from being polite, it's a way of showing your respect to them as their visitor. It's only THEIR house you've been to....
