Microsoft word is a huge intergrated program that requires a large amount of memory and speed. Most of the time the program is caused by the program scanning the document with the virus scanner. Or the auto save function, which enables the auto recovery function.

How much memory do you have? If you have little memory, then any application you use might lag your computer since your Windows uses a chunk of the memory as well. Word uses a bit of your memory so you might want to X out other programs when you use that program.
Also, check your anti-virus and anti-spyware/trojan security suite to check if anything is corrupting your Word files that might be causing this lag.
Go to Start menu, then Control Panel, and then click on SYSTEM and check how much memory you have. If you have about 128MB, then you might want to add more RAM into your computer. I promise you, if you upgrade your computer with more RAM (at least 512MB), then you will never have this lag ever again.

If it is a long file, and you work a long time without File, Save, everything you have done is in memory. We are advised to save our work about every 15 minutes. When working on a complicated file, I save after everything that works. Then, if the next move messes everything up, you can close without saving the mistake. A friend of mine worked on a 120 page file without saving. When she finished, she could not save. We had to cut & paste bit by bit into another file. A word to the wise. You could also buy another memory chip.
