I have a Golden Retreiver who is seven months, and although she likes baths and showers shies away from the inground swimming pool. I thought that by nature retreivers are water dogs, and I was wondering a safe way to intoduce her to the pool, without scaring her off. Or without just pulling her in with me.

She has no problem sitting by the steps and lapping up the water.

She's telling you she's not ready. Don't force it. Have you tried a stream or lake? (if u have 1 nearby) It could be the smell of chlorine, the water temp or something else. Our 2 love the water & don't care where it comes from. The female loves to be sprayed with a hose, or jumping in & out of a big storage tub she's too big for. The male likes being misted by the hose but hates being squirted, especially in the face. He chewed the fancy nozzle right off the hose, now there are other teeth marks in the hose, he's sneaky. Now at the lake, they turn into fish & at the end of the day have to be dragged out. He's almost 2 & she's about 8 months. Both gorgeous, smart, yet stubborn dogs.

I've never seen a retriever that didn't like the water. She might not be ready yet, or maybe there's something else about the pool that freaks her out (screaming kids, etc.). Try throwing a ball into the pool, and she should go after it when she feels ready.

However, have you ever tried to clean dog hair out of a pool filter? Also, did you know that being in water usually makes dogs have to go to the bathroom, and they have no qualms about doing so in the water? You might want to rethink inviting your pup into the family pool.

shes just frightened-im sure she knows how to swim. bringing her in the pool isnt the cleanist idea and she may be afraid of the smell. bring her to a lake. if shes afraid of that try introducing it to her in small steps. everytime she gets closer reward her.eventually she will be able to sit near by. then teach her to stick one paw in. then the other. eventually shell go in

If you put dogs in water they will swim automatically. But if she is afraid you don't want to push her. You also don't want to put her in a pool with chlorine.
