what is the map data format used for commercial/open gps devices? I want to use the map for TomTom, Trimble or Garmin GPS products or PDAs or Smart Phones...

I've never followed these instructions, but they should prove of value to you in your task:

There's also a program I've used a time or two on my Garmin iQue 3600 - PathAway - it should also do what you want, but you may be limited as to the hardware you can use it on:

First, are you aware that it is illegal for you to copy maps that are copyrighted? In ANY form?... even to convert them to digital format... you will need permission of the copyright holder... or you can make your own maps... or buy commercial maps in digital format.
