When I was in elementary school I heard that one -- same wording. It was probably when I was in second grade (1979-1980 school year). It's still good, and I remember the rest of it!
The full poem's called "The Lie."
After your section:
A deaf policeman heard the noise,
He came and shot the two dead boys.
And if you don't believe this story's true,
Ask the blind man -- he saw it too!
Thanks for reminding of something really fun! Have a great day!

This is lovely popular, it's referred to as 'JABBERWOCKY' Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble within the wabe: All mimsy had been the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. "Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that chunk, the claws that seize! Beware the Jubjub chicken, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!" He took his vorpal sword in hand: Long time the manxome foe he sought -- So rested he by way of the Tumtum tree, And stood awhile in inspiration. And, as in uffish inspiration he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling by way of the tulgey picket, And burbled because it got here! One, 2! One, 2! And by way of and by way of The vorpal blade went giggle-snack! He left it useless, and with its head He went galumphing again. "And, has thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my hands, my beamish boy! O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!' He chortled in his pleasure.
