Mixes the ice cream for you.
It used to be done by hand years ago putting your container in salt and ice. Salt/ice lowered the temperature below 32 degrees so you could mix your ice cream and have it freeze.
Now you can have the machine do it! :-)

An ice cream maker just turns the mixture so it freezes.
You can do it by hand this way ((I did this when I was younger, took awhile though)).
Take 2 coffee cans, or any type of containers. One must fit into the other with room on all sides. Put your ice cream mixture in the smaller of the two containers and seal it up. Then stick in inside the larger container and add ice and salt all around the can. Seal the larger one and roll it around. The ice will melt and freeze the mixture. You will ahve to open up the larger can and add more ice and salt but after awhile you will have ice cream.

I assume you are talking about a homemade maker.
All it does is spin the inside to move the ice cream mix around so that it all freezes at the same time and not some here and some there.
Yes it can be done by hand, there are some hand spinning machines, but for you can do it in ziplock bags if you really want it by hand. (Your hands could get really cold doing it this way.)

Have you ever seen ham on the street on food network? He had a bunch of garbage men make ice cream in a garbage bag. They put all of the ice cream ingredients in a ziploc baggie and the ice and salt in the garbage bag, put the ziploc in there and then tossed it around. Viola! ice cream. They also have a ball that is designed pretty much the same way you add all the ingredients and then toss or kick it around and it makes ice cream. Its pretty inexpensive.

It turns the container not the ingredients like a mixer. The texture would be different if you did it by hand-but you also need ice and rock salt on the outside.
