Electro- convulsant therapy is still used today. Not for the same reasons of course!! But its used as a treatment for depression.

It was used in the 50's as a cure for homosexuality.....

The age at which people received treatment ranged from 13 to 40 years, with most being in their late adolescence and early 20s. Treatments described were mainly administered in NHS hospitals throughout Britain and in one case a military hospital. Those treated privately usually underwent psychoanalysis. The most common treatment (from the early 1960s to early 1970s, with one case in 1980) was behavioural aversion therapy with electric shocks (11 participants). Nausea induced by apomorphine as the aversive stimulus was reported less often (four participants in the early 1960s).

I don't know about the sex bit, but electric shock treatment was still going on in hospitals in 1972 - When I was a patient in hospital, I met a woman who was given this treatment and I asked her if it hurt, I remember her telling me that she was given something first, she said the treatment was to help her and that it gave her a poor memory after. She was a bit subdued after these treatments but I can't remember too much about it myself because it scared the sugar out of me, and in those days I had trained myself to not hold unimportant things in my mind -

Laugh - it wasn't me by the way - laugh

Yes, I've read about such poor treatment of women for sexual "faults" in the early 20th century. Try searching for mental health history or the history of sex in the 20th century.

wow. i've never heard about the electric shock treatment thing but I have heard that, for similar reasons, vibrators were invented...but for medical purposes. I believe doctors handled them & women were brought to them if they were considered "crazy" & then a treatment calmed them & supposedly took care of the craziness for a while. Don't quote me on that though! haha. Have you tried looking that up on Wikipedia? It seems to be a very helpful online encyclopedia.....

I won't give you any grief about asking this question.
You might be able to get some more info from your library, unfortunatley this is the first I've heard of it so I can't help you personally, sorry.
Good luck with that,
