Dad bougt me a ship in a bottle and when I showed it to my Uncle Pete he said "Story of my life" but he's never been a sailor. He's always saying things I don't get.

He sounds nice and approachable. I don't know how old you are, but don't feel small and ask him directly what he means. Maybe he is always saying things you don't get just so you will question him and hear his stories.
Go ahead - tell him you don't get it. Tell him it sounds like he feels trapped; had possibilities to move in some direction, but didn't act, or couldn't act on them. Interract with him, instead of us!

Sounds metaphorical to me.
Perhaps he is referring to the ship being in the bottle. The ship having the capabilities of travel, but not being able to because it is stuck in a bottle.
A bit like "Just my luck". I've got a boat, but I can't sail it anywhere.

perhaps he feels trapped. like the boat, maybe he feels like he is in a place he can't escape from.
or he could just be looking for some attention, which is a whole differant problem.
