Yes its another dimension.
Blackness because thats where there is no light.
Stars, there are a lot of stars. Lots of things floating around these stars. Don't judge the world by what you can and can't see. There's a lot you see and don't understand, and there's a lot you don't see. Vision is but one of the senses. What do you feel? What do you hear?
There is billions and billions of starts out there. There are billions and billions of galaxies with billions and billions of stars in them.
If there is a 1 in 1,000,000, chance that one of those stars has a planet with life on it, then there is thousands of civilizations out there.

To understand Heaven and hell and where they are you need to go to the source... the Bible
Hell (keywords)
Lowest Hell - appears 2x's
Down into Hell - appears 9 x's
Descend - appears once
beneath - appears once
dig down - appears once
into hell -appears 4 x's
Rich man (Luke 16:23) "And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom."
All of these verses lead me to conclude that hell is in the center of the earth. This is not the final resting place for those who reject Christ, as Revelation indicates. Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Heaven -
It is first necessary to understand that there are two different heavens mentioned in the Bible. Before the Flood the earth was enveloped in a canopy of water (Genesis 1:9 - And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.) This is the way the earth was watered. The ground in the morning would water the plants and vegetation from beneath. Modern science utilizes this technology to grow large vegetation (search: drip irrigation) The other heaven that is mentioned is the literal place that all the redeemed will be going either at the rapture or at their death.
Keywords:
Ascend to heaven; climb up to; looking up to, coming in the clouds of heaven, descended from heaven, stars of heaven, etc.
Heaven, the place, is past space. You, by faith, have to understand that this is a literal place you can go to but are not going to see until God allows it.
If you do not have the faith to believe when you can not see, how then, will you have the faith to believe if you could see it?

The concept of dimention as dipicted by popular media is not backed by scientific community.
Also if you can't see any thing does not mean there isn't any thing.
The existance of Heaven and Hell is proven only though the belief in some religion. If you are convinced that a religion is true according to the arguments it gives for its truthfulness then you can safely say that Heaven and Hell do exist. Where? It might be anywhere which is yet out of our comprehention. Like the idea of dimentions mean nothing to anyone a few centuries ago maybe it is some place we have no idea about yet. Also if God choses to hide something then sure nobody is going to see it, are they?
Also one of the arguments given as the truthfulness of Islam in summary is given here.

Your thoughts about blackness and stars is based upon the three dimensional world in which we all live. You are looking for something you can touch or see. But it is believed that heaven and hell are in a forth dimension such as 'time' or perhaps a dimension of a type that is totally unknown to man.

Heaven exists, hell does not. The Bible says 144,000 will go to heaven. The rest will live on the earth, forever. Then you will have the opportunity to look at the blackness of space and see the beautiful stars that Jehovah has created. As for hell, the Bible refers it to mankind's grave. The Irish used the term "helling over" for covering the potatoes with dirt. The same is true for the grave. We cover over the grave with dirt. So we're "hellin over" the grave site. Why would God give his worst enemy a personal domain to torment people forever? It doesn't make sense for a God of love to allow Satan to do that. God will get rid of Satan and death forever very soon.

In the days before light pollution (streetlights and such) you could see a lot more of the universe than you can now. In some places you could see the milky way. So I guess it's no great leap to thinking the stars were the souls of your ancestors. Therefore: heaven. In the same manner, volcanoes with rivers of lava coming from the underworld. Hell. IT IS that simple.

Hell does not exist except as a concept which refers to being absent from the presence of God. There is no literal place/dimension of fire and brimstone, et al. where people are tortured for all eternity. God is not so cruel as to even imagine such a place.
Heaven is a term which actually applies to different concepts. Various religions' uses of the word "heaven" or "heavens" refer to actual places which exist in our universe. Prophets throughout the ages were given visions of places in the universe which to their primitive minds were only comprehensible as "Heaven". They knew no cosmology and could not comprehend the possibility of there being other planets and other civilizations.
That being said, there is an actual place called Heaven or Paradise which is where the existential God resides. This place is not part of our space-time continuum. It is existential and eternal, like God himself. It exists outside our universe of space and time.

Yes, by the statement of Stephen who was stoned, he saw into heaven so heaven would be between the earth and the moon, in another dimension.

Heaven doesn't have to be "UP" and Hell doesn't have to be "DOWN", does it? Different dimension? sure, why not. But, think of this - what if here... right where we are... on Earth was hell. No joke, think of it. There is murder, hate, despair. Anger, lust, greed. Maybe our time is hell is while we are living.
Or not. What would Stephen Hawking say?

If it is another dimension, then what makes you think you should be able to see it at all? As to whether they exist, that would depend on your personal beliefs, and you need to discover that for yourself.
