I get diet coke because I like the flavor..some people think because its diet they can eat a ton of stuff and it will make the calories go away.

I can only speak for myself, not people in general. First of all, I very rarely eat at McDonalds, but when I do, I am one of those who orders a diet soda.
Here's why: There are many flaws in typical fast food. It tends to be high in saturated fat, high in processed carbohydrates, and low in fiber. When I'm stuck at a McDonalds or other fast food restaurant (for instance if I'm with friends who insist on going), the easiest thing to control is to avoid the extra sugar hit from the soda. Then as long as I choose a meal that is not too high in fat, and include some vegetables, I'm not doing too badly.

If you eat one hamburger (260), a large order of fries (570) and a large coke (310), you eat a total of 1140 calories in one sitting. Most likely over half your daily intake on calories.

Knock out the 310 cals with a diet coke and you only take in 830 calories.

You burn nearly 300 calories in 45 minutes of aerobic work out. Therefore, in order to work off JUST that "regular coke," you'd have to exercise for 45 minutes. Now, I'm not saying that it's healthy to eat fast food and not work out... but I am saying, if you are eating out and you want to save some calories, get a diet... it's not stupid. It makes since. Just like not having cheese and mayo on a burger cuts out calories.

And by the way, One pound of fat equals about 3,500 calories. Therefore, one could lose a pound a week by cutting about 500 calories a day. Minus one large coke per day and you are over half way there.

I do that because Diet Coke tastes better to me. It has nothing to do with trying to "counteract the calories" or thinking you'll save calories on the drink when you're eating an 800 calorie burger. I eat the Big Mac because it's tasty, I drink the Diet Coke because it's tasty.

Some I think like to think they are cutting colories that way, but for some it is just the taste. Some people can only drink diet coke, others just like the flavor, I actually prefer diet coke over regular coke. And just so you know I don't eat fast food, it doesn't agree with me. : - )

This really is a no-brainer questions. Get beyond your small minded thinking. I'm one that orders a diet pop with my burger and fries and I don't have to watch my weight. It's simply that I do not like the sweet taste of regular pop. I prefer the taste of diet pop or even iced tea with my meals. Pretty simply!

Didn't you know--the Diet Coke counteracts the fries and burgers so all the calories leak out! Actually, I have a legitimate reason: I'm diabetic, so I can't have the sugar in the drinks. I shouldn't have the fat, either, but. . .

Some people just prefer the taste diet beverages. Also some people can't have regular pop, my dad is diabetic so he can only have diet! Don't be a jerk about stuff if you don't know what you are talking about!
