I remember in 1965 there were a few kids that did that on the Trooper Terry Show, which was on WJBF Channel Six. If my memory serves me well, it took over two hundred fifty. Terry Sands, who was Trooper Terry, announced the number just before the Tarzan yell contest.

The tootsie roll pop company says: It depends on a variety of factors such as the size of your mouth, the amount of saliva, etc. Basically, the world may never know.

However there have been actual studies done. Here are the results.

According to http://www.tootsie.com here are the official findings:

* A group of engineering students from Purdue University recorded that their licking machine, modeled after a human tongue, took an average of 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. They tried the same licking test on 20 volunteers and found that the average licks to the center were 252 licks.

* A chemical engineering doctorate student from the University of Michigan recorded that his licking machine required an average of 411 licks per Tootsie Pop.

* A group of students at Swathmore School used human lickers in a scientific experiment and determined it took an average of 144 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.

Tootsie Fact: Students at Whittier Elementary in Waukesha, WI determined that it takes an average of 9 minutes to reach the center of a Tootsie Pop.

Actually, there have been studies to try to determine how many licks. However, I do not recall if any of the studies were conclusive in their answer. Also, the number of licks depends on the size of the tongue, the amount of saliva, and the amount of pressure applied. For instance, it may take 500 licks from a 5 year old, but only 400 licks from a 20 year old.

In summary, nobody really knows.

I got a old t-shirt of my dads from the earlt 70,s and it has the owl sitting on a
tree branch with a tootsie pop in his mouth. Anyway,my fiancee enter a contest for that same question and it was decided that it took 350 licks, more or less.
