If she is as close to you as your Grandmother then YOU already know the answer in your heart. There is only one thing we want from our loved ones as we get older . . .TIME.
Give her a gift of Your time. If she is in good health and active take her to a favorite place. If she is more the homebody, go to her and get her talk about her childhood and Write It Down!!!
Think about it, isn't there someone you would like the gift of time from?

Well, I guess it all depends on how healthy she is and all. Like, if she is healthy enough to like, go out and go shopping and all, maybe a grocery gift card or a gift card to her favorite department store. If she is not healthy enough or lives in a nursing home or something, I would think like, making her a blanket. Actually, I think that is the best idea. If you know how to knit or crochet or quilt, you should make her a blanket or quilt. She will love it! It was made by you and you worked hard on it. All grandmas (or aunts) love that kind of stuff.

Pick out some of her favorite snacks or treats, like hard candies, mints, etc...and if she likes crossword puzzles, maybe some of those, and alot of times, you can find large-print books for older people if she has trouble seeing to read, or books on tape, and make a gift bag full of things she can use every day. or else, if she has trouble getting around, plan a day that you can both get together and do shopping, dry cleaning, etc. Whatever she wants..

chocolate - flowers - lunch together - manicure appointment (or better yet a set/style & manicure) - bottle of liquor - candles - gift basket of jams/cheese/jelly etc.
Something that wont sit around the house and cause more clutter than an 89 year old would already possess!
by the way - WOW 89, thats a huge milestone!

You didn't say where she lived, but I know that my 87 year old aunt is cold all the time. Perhaps a sweater, or perhaps a sweatshirt that buttons up the front (my aunt does not like over the head stuff) or a throw, a rug like thing that she can put around her shoulders.

Give her a gift card at her beauty shop. I will make her feel so good to go in and have her hair fixed and not worry because of the price!

A picture or dinner out sound good. Or you could give her a set of maybe 10 index cards with various gifts written on them, like dinner out, 2 hours help cleaning, taking her to church, to the grocery store... that she could request whenever she wants to, if you think she'd do the requesting.

make up a "gift basket" of some things that may interest her, such as small and easy craft items, stationary and stamps if she still corresponds by writing, and some yummies. the knowledge that you put some thought into giving her a variety of things she she wants and needs will impress upon her how much you care. be creative in gathering up your "i care" package for her. she'll be impressed. it's wonderful to hear about people that DO still care!!

Take her out to dinner or perhaps something at the theatre. She would appreciate the memory more than a physical gift.

Why don't you take her out to dinner or something like that. I would think that the best gift for her is to spend time with you.
