When do you think my new parakeet will be able to come out of her cage?
Hi i bought a new parakeet about a month ago and so far has been out of her cage three times but each time she was terrified. the first time i threw a blanket over her and did not miss and got her back safely. The second time i missed and had to use my hand to gently coax her step by step back home. The third time i had no choice but to catch her with my hands. I am worried about when she would be ready to come out without her being so scared. Inside the cage she is awesome and she is hand tame. She will step on my hand to eat millet without thinking twice. But then once she gets out of the cage she is a totally different story. Is she just not ready yet? Are there any signs that a bird is ready? are there any methods that will let the bird make her own decision to pluck up the courage and come out by herself?

you need to hold her in your hand and take her out for about 5 min each day hold her in a gental but firm grip with her wings flat aginst her back and her feet resting on your pinki, this is what I did with my bird and she would stand on my finger outside the cage and she would go back into the cage on her own when she was finished if I left the cage open for her, you should also try leaving the cage open for your bird
oh and you should let her out in a small room at first, she will be less afraid of it and you can catch her easier

It's a big world out there. Is she clipped? She should be, & that will help her see your hand is better than the floor. Have some millet ready & act like she is still in her cage. Next to it is good.
But, if she can fly, she no doubt will, & it will be hard to tame her if she can just fly at any perceieved threat.

First of all make sure that there are no ceiling fans or cook stoves on. Pick a time when no one is around and no other pets. Use something to prop open the door and sit quietly by, and look up at the bird and say something nice occasionally. Don't rush the bird and make it your on special time together when you want it out.

Maybe it's just shy and needs the security of the cage.
We had a couple of parakeets. One was happy as a clam when she got out. The other would panic and fly back in the cage just about as soon as you let go of him. We had him for 6 or 7 years and he never got over it.
Have you tried opening the door and letting it come and go IF it pleases? (Only when you are willing to have it out of course.)
Oh...try a butterfly net. They are wonderful for catching runaway birds. ;)

It was over two months after I got my parakeet that she felt comfortable enough and trusted me enough to come out of the cage. But every bird is different. Slowly get her adjusted to the outside world, give her lots of love, and she will come around.

My mother had one of those little things. The best thing that I can tell you is to work with her every day. Just take her out of the cage, gentally and hold her close to your chest for awhile and start working with her like that . slowly you will be able to let her fly around the room and she will come back to your finger or shoulder.

I had a keet that was free to roam. He may now be scared to come out do to being caught. When mine landed on the floor, I would coax him over to a knoted rope I made (which was attached to his open cage door platform, and went straight down to the floor) and taught him to crawl up it.Actually he figured it out. It worked great! I never got him scared when he came out.just sort of left him.

Give her time. She'll go back to the cage by herself too if she thinks of the cage as her home base and not something to be afraid of. She sounds like a cutie!

She may need some time getting used to her surroundings. If she can fly well, don't let her out. Let her adjust and maybe in two months time she can come out. My parakeet took a while to get used to. They are naturally scared of everything new to them even surroundings.
