The tubal ligation is absolutely NOT 100% effective.
I am a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, specializing in OB/GYN in a women's hospital rated among the best in the United States. I can tell you I have personally examined women who have become pregnant even after having undergone the tubal ligation procedure. In fact, statistics indicate the actual failure rate is 1/2 of one percent (0.4% -0.5%) or, approximately 1 in 200 women. Unfortunately, many of these pregnancies result in ectopic pregnancies (a pregancy implanted outside the womb, within the fallopian tubes, ovary, or adnexa).
Fertilization occurs within the fallopian tube, even with a "normal" pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when sperm was able to travel into the fallopian tube to meet the egg, but the united egg and sperm, or zygote, is unable to travel into the womb (uterus) where implantation should take place.
Sterilization should be considered permanent, as reversals of the precedure are often not successful. Female sterilization (tubal ligation) and Male sterilization (vasectomy) each have an excellent effective rate. In both, pregnancy occurs in less than 1 in 100. However, neither is zero.
Misinformation about the effectiveness of either procedure, i.e., believing they are 100% effective, can lead to mistrust and accusations between a couple.
If you are considering the procedure you should also research "Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome." If you or your partner has undergone the procedure and are suspicious because of a pregnancy, I suggest that you discuss your concern with your partner, and if doubt is still an issue genetic testing is available to determine paternity.

This is one ridiculous "rumor" that has been around far too long. The answer to your question is an emphatic NO. You can not became pregnant after a Tubal Ligation. You are protected 100% from becoming pregnant because not only are the Falopian Tubes "cut and severed"...they are secondly "tied" and then thirdly "burned" to destroy the tissue and therefore impossible to "reattach" or for sperm to transit the empty void between the vagina and falopian tubes that lead to the ovaries from where your egg is produced. It is just a ridiculous rumor. Let there come forth even ONE woman (who is educated and sane) who has had Tubal Ligation now stand give testimony to a verifiable "pregnancy". It won't happen...so be at rest.

Yes, although it VERY rare. The main problems are from damage to the tube, ectopic and abdominal pregnancies. Here are two reports from the medical literature.
Hsu S. Ding DC. Ovarian pregnancy in a woman after postpartum tubal ligation. European Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology, & Reproductive Biology. 124(1):121-2, 2006 Jan 1.
QUOTE:
"Ectopic pregnancy occurring after tubal ligation is rare, especially after postpartum partial salpingectomy. The incidence of such event is about 0.12%"
Wittich AC. Primary ovarian pregnancy after postpartum bilateral tubal ligation: a case report. Journal of Reproductive Medicine. 49(9):759-61, 2004 Sep.
QUOTE:
"Bilateral tubal ligation failure is uncommon, occurring in approximately 1% of tubal sterilization procedures. Should pregnancy occur after bilateral tubal ligation, of every 3 such pregnancies, 1 will be an ectopic. "

my mother had a tubal and still had 3 kids. but that was back in 1993 when she got hers done. a tubal is like a vasectomy. they are most of the way effective but there is always the x factor of the tubes coming undone thus the possibility of a tubal pregnancy, but those are very small odds. pretty close to 100 percent effective though

Since you are saying it's the physician that's requiring this permission and no longer enforced by means of legislation I might allow the general public recognize that this designated physician calls for permission from a husband for a tubal ligation. Put the stress on him and probably he'll difference his methods. The complete permission factor is old-fashioned and ridiculous. What occurs with this physician for single ladies, does he require a permission slip from a boyfriend, dubious. This physician is discriminating towards you and different ladies on the grounds that of marital reputation. He will have to be stopped. I might difference medical professionals and file him to the disciplinary board.

To the poster who emphatically stated this cannot happen (citing his "credentials" of having a wife and daughters) - yes, it can happen.
I like to think of myself as "educated and sane". I'm an OB nurse and have encountered three women who have had tubal ligations and gotten pregnant. It is very unlikely, but it does happen. Vasectomies can fail also.

It is not 100% effective there have been cases of pregnancy or the tubes rehealing.
It is however the most effective form.
A vasectomy though is much safer for a couple. Just try to get him to do it though haha
