My dog is like this, and was also abused as a puppy. I asked one of my family friends who owns lots of dogs and she said not to worry about it, it just meant that he was comfortable.
She also said there are many reasons for dogs to look, some are compulsive lickers, some are nervous lickers, some lick when they're hungry, etc.
Your dog is fine! It sounds like he is doing well despite his history, keep up the good work with him!

I've never had an abused dog, but every dog I've had has been this way to a degree. The dog I have now does it all the time, licking the carpet, couch, us, everything. So I would say he probably just loves you very much, and maybe likes licking things too.

I want to know too. I have a corgi that licks everything...I caught him licking the wall the other day. It's like a drug and he can't help it...he just has to get his lick in. He will sometimes do a quick lick to the ankle when you walk by him. He'll stop licking if I say his name and give him "the look", but he soon will start again. It drives me crazy.
Is he really showing his appreciation and affection to my pillow? my watch? the remote control? the flower pot? the wall? Wow...what an affectionate dog. I think he's just crazy.

Any dog,if it becomes constant that he licks you he may be missing something in his diet. However,he could just be happy to see you and get overly excited. It isnt out of the ordinary since he has been through that.He may have some emotional/mental effects from it.(yes dogs can have this.)Honestly, most dogs i have been around do that at first and then stop after a few minutes. If it continues and has continued for longer than 10 mins at a time, and if he does this constantly he may need something different in his diet. You can take him to a vet and they can give him a supplement to replace what is missing, although often times you can simply fix this by changing the brand of dog food you feed him/her.

I have a boxer and he doesn't really lick us but he loves licking up spills or crumbs. I think the dog may have developed that behavior when he was starved probably licking at anything hoping to find food or anything. He's probably also very grateful to have a loving home too. Hopefully he will adjust and stop licking.

probly not. this is a dog submission behavior. it ment he was hungry (not surprisingly). wild puppies would lick the mouths of there mothers or fathers that came back from a hunt to encurrage them to regertitate food. he may grow out of it if you keep re-asuring him hes safe now and everything ok. you may want to make sure he has a bunch of toys around to keep him mind off of licking things. soon or alater he'll realize he gets nothing out of licking objects and that play is better.

If you people would stop buttering yourselves in peanut oil, that would go a long way towards solving the problem.
