My poor little puppy, acctually, shes 8 yrs old, gets those icky hot spots qite often. I've tried cutting her hair, and doctoring them, but she gets the so often. By the way, we have a bishon,(Bridgett 8yrs old); a boxer (Tater, 1 1/2 yrs old.); a black lab/pointer mix (Diablo, 2yrs. old); and one kitty, (Bijjiggitty, 4 years old). All of whom are rescue animals.

Our dog gets these hot spots to. He has allergies, but not a food allergy. Dogs can be allergic to the same types of things that people can. Here's what our vet told us: (1) try giving your pup one caplet of Benadryl, or generic brand, per day; (2) get some spray Benadryl for quick relieve; or (3) get regular cortesone shots for your pup. Also, get really good flea protection: a lot of dogs are allergic to fleas. Be careful which one you get, though, because some of them are toxic to cats.

We've found that only the cortesone shots work for our pup. He gets them regularly during the warmer months. That's bad, because too much cortesone can shorter your dog's lifespan. But we'd rather have our pup live a shorter, pain-free life than a longer one where he spends half of it painful, itchy agony.

It'd definately try the Bendryl tablets and spray first, though. However, if the hot spots never seem to go away, even in winter, it might just be a food allergy. In this case, your vet will need you to put your pup on a rigid diet to see what he reacts to (you'll have to make sure he doesn't sneak food from the other animals, too). Then, your vet can provide you with food that your dog shouldn't be allergic to.

She may have allergies. Try changing her food. If the food you are feeding now has corn, try one without. It may take several tries before you find one that makes a difference. Give the new food several weeks to see any changes.

Try using EPI-SOOTHE shampoo. Also get a cortisone cream from your vet.Bis-hons cant take the heat so they need to be keep ed inside and not in high grass .The cream should be used sparingly ,but it does the job.
