Why does it seem like nearly everyone on the east side of the U.S. thinks of Washington D.C. when you just say Washington. I've been to New York, Florida, and South Carolina several times, and whenever they ask me where I'm from, I always tell them I'm from Washington and they always assume Washington D.C.

Perhaps it is because we see Washington DC on the news more often than Washington state. It may also be that people assume you are from the east coast since you are visiting up and down the coast.

Because Washington DC is on the East Coast. However, I'm originally from Washington DC, and now live in Boston, and if I just tell people I'm from Washington originally, they almost always ask if I mean DC or the state.
