If not, can someone tell me how to get the CD's from Dell without being charged for a new copy?

You can, so long as it's the same version of xp, such as home or pro.

If the key doesn't work, you can call microsoft, they will ask the model number of the computer, and will activate it for you. I've done it several times.

yes you can use another window xp with your dell xp key.
just make sure its the OEM edition and not the retail version and your good. but you will have to go to dell.com to get all your drivers and software back. good luck. as long as its the same version like xp home or xp pro. just get the cd from anyone who has the same thing and install it as long as they didnt buy it from the stores it should install fine.

if you never created the restore discs like dell and hp both tell you to do and install the software to make the os discs, then contact dell. dell may send you the discs for your system for a small fee. i know hp will send discs for around 20 bucks as long as you registered the pc when it was purchased.

Nope. The CDs are PC-specific. You can thank Microsoft for that.

If you don't want to pay, try to find a key generator somewhere (google "Windows key generator")

depends on the other XP CD, if it's OEM, yes. you just need to try it.
