The main reason when I was an Aerodrome Controller was to avoid bird strikes. Modern aircraft (apart from tiddlers) do not fly by eyesight whatever you may think

For visibility to OTHER aircraft.

Below 10,000ft the airspace is the most congested, so while maneuvering on the departure proceedure all the exterior lights are on so that the plane is more easily spottered as traffic by other aircraft.

Procedure and visibility.

With the close proximity to the ground it is difficult to spot an aircraft taking off.
The light is a good visibility feature that airlines set up as procedure so aircraft coming in can spot them better.

Before taking the runway, last items on checklist, lights, camera, action
lights= landing/taxilights
camers=transponder to alt
action= firewall the throttle time to go!!!!!!

I think it might be so they can see better at night. so they can see the taxiway and how to get to the runway.
And they aren't landing lights. Landing lights and taxiing lights are right next to each other but are different.
It's easy to get those mixed up.

Besides visibility, it's an acknowledgment of take-off clearance. They are turned off above 10,000 ft ASL.

It is so that other airplanes can see us. We can takeoff and land without landing lights just fine, but they make us more visible to other airplanes.

Not only can aircraft spot them easier, but also if they have to abort the takeoff, the lights will already be on.
